Hey, I like snow, for a week! Then I'm ready for Spring. Unfortunately, that is not where I live.

I tore down the carb yesterday and gave it a good cleaning. I removed all the green gook, and poked fine wire into all the very small holes. Put it back on the old engine and the darn thing powered right up. Ran pretty good too. Then I had the internal argument about what to do with it. I think I lost. Since the newer one had 20-some fewer years of history, I took the path of most resistance by repowering it. So now the older, running engine is on the newer chassis. In the process I moved the newer gas tank, recoil cover, electric start and pulleys to the older block. I also moved the engine shutoff from old handle to the air box/heater. Everything now works as it should. I was a successful mini-project, in the end.

Chuck, I like snow, too. That's one of the reasons I left L.A. in favor of the Ozarks. Now. instead of driving 100 miles to get to it, I just step off my porch. The difference is that here the white stuff is measured in inches instead of feet, and it's (usually) gone in a week! I'm familiar with Chicago winters. NO THANKS!!!

I'd like to move a bit further South. Our residence ain't changin' anytime soon. This is where family is. No chance of relocating in my lifetime. I might as well deal with it the best I can. One plus is that I am retired and don't have to deal with snowy, icy roads if I don't want to.

I can understand that. When I left Cali, most of the family thought I was "Nuts"! Well, I Am, but not about leaving Commiefornia. Now 14 years later, They've all left but about 3 or 4. We're scattered all over the country now.

I finally got a local job so I don't have to commute every 2 weeks and be away from home all the time. It's getting a bit chilly in the mornings already, but it was at least clear yesterday, so I drove my locost to work. Just my luck that my first week I got stuck at a railroad crossing where a train cleared the crossing, but stopped close enough that the arms stayed down. So now everyone knows me and my car, plus the fact that I went across the tracks when I wasn't supposed to. Good first impressions are important.

Popped the cylinders out of an Alfa Romeo block prior to getting a shipping quote.

Shitty day today my friends, we had to put our 10 year old mini long haired Dachshund, Little Miss Fergie, down this morning.
Tears our hearts out.

Bad day all around when you loose a beloved pet. Please accept my condolences! Our Doxie, Ginger is getting a bit long in the tooth, and I'm dreading the day when her time comes! :(

That's the trouble with pets. You outlive them, at least most of the time. Know your pain Perry and send condolences. They do leave a lot of wonderful memories.

Best wishes,

Awwww, mannnn.... That hurts... I've seen plenty of pics of Fergie on FB, and know Mrs. Horchoha loved that dog. Sorry for your loss.

Likewise, Perry, Anne and I would like to express our condolences. We're dog lovers too and we know how much of a loss it can be.

After all this time, and Dave's temporary disappearance, I really thought those years were gone forever...

I wasn't working on my Locost, but it was a low cost (free) project. I have a bunch of old DeWalt 18v xrp cordless tools that still work great, and only 4 batteries. The old NiCad's aren't exactly great, even if you buy new ones for around $100/each. So I grabbed an old DeWalt battery out of the recycling bin at work, took it apart, and re-built it with the good cells out of an old laptop battery. I haven't tried it under load yet, but it seems to work great, and is currently sitting on the original DeWalt charger which so far seems to work properly. Worst case, I have an old charger that no longer works, so I can use it as a holder and run wires from it to one of my RC car chargers that works properly with lithium batteries. My old tools should have a bit more power with the new battery too, it's about 3v higher than the original batteries when charged.

Unplug NOW!

Lithium batteries on a NiCad/NIMH charger are really, really bad news...
