I built trusses once and decided that I would buy them thereafter. Talk about a picky job to build them, even with a template on my workshop floor. I got a surprise at plan approval for my building permit. The inspector couldn't approve trusses unless they were manufactured or my drawings were stamped by a PE. I'm a PE, but spent most of my career in government. Approving my truss drawings was the only time in my career I used my PE stamp in anger. :-)

Warren, can you verify my garage door header plan? I'm building the same thing that was in my SC garage.
Doubled 2x12 with 1/2 inch OSB spacer glued and nailed. 5 16D nails every 16 inches
Then nailing a 2x4 on the bottom of the assembly with 2 nails every 16 inches.

I've called Code Compliance and no one seems certain. They said nearly everyone is using LVL headers to save time.

Steel I-beams. Yeah, let the hurricanes blow THAT down! (male grunting noises).

At least that's my plan for when I hit the lotto...

Trusses arrived 20 minutes ago. Came with PE stamped framing plan, design loading details, BCBI-B1 installation and bracing details, a TWO, yes TWO carpenter pencils.

What? No Sharpies? Or maybe the truss company put Sharpies in there, but they escaped, leaving the pencils behind. Sounds like something a bunch of rat-b@stard Sharpies would do...

tommy, I can't say for certain. I am not a structural engineer. However I did some searching. I think your 2x12's with OSB is not a good choice. I've read some reports of built up 2x12 beams of a similar span used on a gable end like yours and they have sagged in short time.

Here is one reference I found for span vs supported roof. It looks like glulam is the recommended way. Size depends on your building code's required snow load.

Chuck, that's the same thing I've been seeing. It makes me question these plans from the lumber yard. I wonder in their plans are they using a gable end truss or a Queen truss because it doesn't specify. Queens transfer the loads to the outer walls, but Gables want full bottom chord support.
Of course these plans aren't stamped by a NC licensed PE.

It looks to me like I should order a LVL for the big span and use the 2x12's if I decide to put a single garage door on the West wall.

:(

Good thing Baby Girl works for Newell Rubbermaid. I have a lifetime supply of Sharpies. Unless the little bastiges keep escaping.

Currently have 4 Sharpies on my desk even the fancy Pro model with a lanyard loop.

I have a conference call then I'm going on a stud cutting spree.

I would use a plywood box beam or steel for that header. And what are you going to hang your chain hoist track from?

Too Busy: I am still a PE, but not with a license to practice anymore. But with that qualifier I would do what a plan approver would do here. According to 'Canadian Wood Frame House Construction' the maximum span for Spruce-Pine-Fir Lintels, No 1 or 2 Grade, with structural sheathing, 2 ply 2x12 , is 9ft 10 ins at 20.9psf snow load (the Canuck minimum). Your double door looks bigger than that ....

What would the specs be on a steel ibeam that would span, say, 20 feet?

Hey Warren,

I’ve seen a third 2 x 12 laminated onto the inside of a garage door header for a double size door suported by 2 x 6 door frame that is either set into a 2 x 4 wall (with the extra dimension either sticking out like a brick mold or sticking inside) or into a 2 x 6 end wall. Does that meet the support requirement for a normal 16’ double garage door?

Bill

BHR,

Too Busy is lucky. The next table in Canadian Wood-Frame House Construction is "Maximum Spans for Built-up Lintels - Roof and Ceiling Load Only - No. 1 or 2 Grade". It provides maximum spans for 3, 4 and 5 ply 2 by beams.

Again for 20.9 psf snow load:

12ft 0in max span for a 3 ply 2 x 10

14 ft 0in max span for a 3 ply 2 x 12 (will carry 31.3psf snow load at 12ft 0in span)

So Too Busy could simply add another 2 x 12 in place of the OSB core. Hopefully the local inspector will have access to similar US-code tables using locally available species.

But sizing an I-beam would require a locally-licensed engineer, although he is likely just to calculate EI for a code-approved wood beam and find a steel I-beam section with equivalent or greater EI.

Edit: A plywood-faced box beam is going to require a stamped drawing. Two-by lumber is probably cheaper. :-)

Tommy, is it too late to change the design to two 8ft doors?
