oops, forgot to check back in

The issue with the sprocket on the winch/starter motor is bearing wear on that part. Those parts are not specd to have continuous operation at the speed they would see on a direct chain setup.

not an issue if the motor only swings into engagement for reverse

the swing mechanism does add complexity though; the one-way clutch idea so that only the sprocket turns would take care of that

I'm having trouble finding a starter motor with CCW rotation.
Looks like some VWs.
Does anyone know about Hondas?

IIRC Honda's CCW motors are H, B, D and F series (but not F20C or F22C1.) I did some research to find a CCW rotation alternator and found the Denso online alternator catalog was very useful in tying the engine series back to Honda models and years manufactured. The catalog also had pictures of the specific alternators and part numbers which saved a lot of junk-yarding time. Denso might have a similar catalog for starters. If not, the alternator catalog would get you partway there.

FWIW, the Honda K-series is CW.

I picked up a VW starter from a local autoelectric guy that looks good.

It's 7.4 lb, CCW rotation, ~9/16" gear stick out travel, 1 HP, 9 tooth.

Used on Jetta 01-06, Beatle 98-04, Golf 00-06, auto transmission only. ( That's what I was told)

I don't know what the gear specs are (pitch diam etc.) but when I find out I'll post here.

I foolishly thought that if I knew the starter RPM I could calculate the diameter of the ring gear I need for a reasonable reverse speed. I forgot that DC motor speed is dependent on load. With no load, the starter spins at 3800 rpm. So it's going to be trial and error. I'll start with a diameter of ring gear approximately the same as my drive sprocket and see how that works.

I've made a little progress.
I decided that calculating the diameter of the reverse gear was more trouble than it was worth so I looked at the picture from locostuk and figured that the reverse bear is about 1" smaller than the sprocket so 9" it is. If it's not right, I'll change it later.
(This is called Lawn Dart Engineering)

Here is a pic of my sprocket and reverse gear.

The sprocket was a blank from Princess Auto and waterjet cut. The gear was watejet cut from a piece of 3/8" steel plate.
Design for the gear was done using GearDXF http://www.forestmoon.com/software/geardxf/
