So a week or so ago, quietly, I struck a deal with thewelder for his FSAE / A Mod chassis. Yesterday Wifey Dearest and I did a turn around trip to the TN KY border to pick it up

It's mostly there and I'm completely happy with what I got for the money. Now I'm trying to decide on what motor to drop in it.
Suzuki Bandit 1250, Suzuki Sv650, or YZ750

I like the bandit motor, just not sure it will fit without major chassis surgery.

Anyway, this is going to sit quietly in the garage while I get the SR20 & going

Well, here you go again! I'm going to subscribe just to see how this thing works out.

Although, to tell the truth, I've had an on-going, self-discussion about doing something like this as a low-buck, autocross toy. I went so far as buying the book "How to Build Motorcycle-engined Racing Cars" when I first became aware of it, which was several years back. With all the other things I have going on, I doubt it will ever happen, so I think I'll live this one out through your build.

Cheers,

Haha, I see your at it again. Do you ever turn a failed project down ;-)

At some point I plan to remake Scrap Metal to take advantage of the rules rather then my current iteration that I build and then tried to fit it into a class. Then part of me just thinks an AMod car would be so much more fun. If you beat everyone in AMod you ruin everyones Pax in Autocross rather than just your own class.

As far as engines go for AMod I believe you want the 1000CC Yamaha snow mobile motor which is basically and R1 but has the CVT, might be called an X1 or something.

I occasionally pass on a failed project, but not that often. I like the Yamaha snowmobile motor, but I think I'd have to lengthen this chassis in order to build in a jackshaft to run a CVT. I don't think I'll be very competitive with a small ,motor, but Chad had campaigned this car very successfully for 2 years with a 600cc. I believe he's a better driver than I am though.

How much do you or the club care about being 100% legal?

None of those engines you listed seem aggressive enough for a light formula car. If it were me I'd get a 600cc engine that the mounts are built for and enjoy the car. Even with the restrictor (I'm sure you'll be running that right? ;) ), those cars are stupid quick and it takes a decent amount of seat time to get your brain trained to keep up with the car. It took about a year when I was doing FSAE but we were also running drivers on multiple 15-20 minute sessions per test day. It will take longer getting less than a minute of seat time per run.

A GSXR 600 popped up on Craigslist today. Going to check it out.

How wide a tire are you going to be running? I'm assuming you'll probably be running slicks. I've got a couple sets from Marsh Racing for my car, and I'm pretty happy with them. Their prices are good, and the weight isn't too bad considering that they're steel wheels. And they build them in any bolt pattern and backspacing you ask for.

Can you send me a link please?

I'm planning on 13x8 or 10 on the back and 13x 6,7, or 8 on the front.
John Berget tire has good prices on low heat cycle take offs and pretty dang good prices on new.

Well crap, I just looked for them again and their website is down. Unfortunately, according to their Facebook page, the owner died last year and nothing after that. It looks like they might be out of business now. I did find a phone # in a yellow pages listing though.

http://m.yp.com/siloam-springs-ar/mip/m ... ls-2463849

I'm pretty sure it was a family business, hopefully someone is picking up again. They made pretty decent wheels for the price. My 13x10's were just under $80 and I think they weigh 14 lbs. If Marsh is out of business, there's also Aero, http://www.aeroracewheels.com, and Bassett, http://www.bassettwheel.com. they both make similar stock car wheels, but I haven't used them. One of the other Canadians on here has Aero wheels on his car though, maybe he can comment on them. Here's a link to his build log.

I bought a set of slicks from Berget too, they were fun. Too bad shipping to Canada cost as much as the tires though.

Nice score on the engine. That should do nicely for awhile. Does the car have an oil pressure gauge?

Check and see what you can get from Hoosier in an R25B compound before picking wheel widths - any other compound is too hard. There is a 20.5x7-13, a 20x7.5-13, and a 20x9-13. Using a 7" wheel and the first tire size is probably the most common for FSAE.

Sadly I never had great luck snagging a set of takeoffs in this compound. I don't think they last long enough to reach "take off" status. On a positive note one set should last for awhile if you're only autocrossing.

It's going to get an oil pressure gauge. Im also thinking about adding an accusump.

Been looking for tires. There's a nice set of takeoffs right now 22x8x13. There were several sets for sale a couple of days ago, No huge rush as I don't think I'll be driving this this season

Me too. It's a nice complete chassis with a couple of minor mods that I'll rework in the engine bay area. The cockpit fits me well, so no changes there. It may or may not get a bigger diameter roll bar. What's on it is legal for cars up to 1000 lbs.

I pulled the plugs on the gxxr motor, shot a little light oil down the holes since it had been sitting for a long time, then jumped the starter. She turns over easily.
Plugs back in, and tossed a blanket over it. Got to get it out of sight while I work on the 7

With the Mini off the build table, I had space to set the A Mod on it.

Then spent time gathering up bits of the Mini from the 4 corners of the garage. Once I had the stuff out a little sweeping, a little reorganizing, then I thought I'd set the engine in the frame instead of letting it rest on the header any longer.

Lift with the hoist, Pull the header, Lower into place... If it were only that easy. Lowering the 600 GSXR into the frame took a lot of wiggling, teasing, finagling, and a bit of swearing. Finally got it at just the right height and angle.

Doesn't seem like a lot, but 7 hours in the garage moving stuff about and cleaning up some. Hot as balls here today.
Now I'm on the couch pounding down water.
