I have been waffling between BEC and car engine for a year! I think I have decided that for the giggle factor alone I am going BEC. Car is done. I just need to install a new power plant. I found an 09 R1 engine and gearbox with 6K miles on craigslist for $1,500. So I have a few questions:
1. Is that a reasonable price?
2. Is there any reason to avoid this engine?
3. What else do I need from the bike?

Thanks

That's a pretty decent price. Add a baffle to the oil pan and drive it like you stole it.

Looks to be a decent price, but it depends what is included.
I believe the 09 is a Crossplane engine, and should be more valuable than an older model. Mine is a '05 and I paid $ 900, but that included the full harness, exhaust and a nearly perfect tank that I sold for $ 250.
You should get the full harness, ECU, all other sensors, the harness for the instrument cluster (which I missed, and had to get in a panic all the way from South Africa), the instrument cluster and as many switches that you can get (handlebar, rear brake, clutch and side stand). If you can get the airbox, that will help, same with the exhaust. The airbox will need to be cut down, and the exhaust is only good for the clamps and maybe the EXUP valve (don't know if that was still used on the 09, but in hindsight, I would have preferred to keep it, and incorporate it in my exhaust system). They really don't have any torque, so any help is an improvement. But once you get that puppy to sing, it is all worth it.
