Gentlemen,

This is the first video of reverse gearbox in action, nothing special though. I will warn you that the video filming by me sucks - can't drive and film at the same time :|. As stated in the in you tube vid, I'm overall satisfied with the test but will need to take the box apart a examine the drive gear and output shaft. There is a 3-5mm gap between the input and output shafts and when I place the box in forward it "somewhat" slips off the output shaft a little. I have to take a screwdriver thought the oil fill hole and nudge the drive gear back in place and then engaging reverse works - not a big issue to fix. I'll attempt to post a picture for better understanding. Box doesn't leak the half quart oil in the box. Forward ratio is 1:1, have to get back with you on the reserve ratio

I got parts back from foundry to make two more Rboxes, working with machinist to work out pricing for finish work. Probably will let these first two boxes go for less than 1k as a promotional, plus the castings ain't quite royalty as Sir Prince William and Miss Kate Middleton - she's pretty hot looking, Right?

My CNC machinist has completed the first 3 sets of gearbox bearing plates and they are ready for assembly. Unfortunately the machinist couldn't clean up the casting error made by the foundry so I'm gonna discount the first three gearboxes. The foundry has poured the gear cover boxes and now they needs to be machined.

From the first image you can see the metal knot on the part, well this is from where the aluminum was poured and it sunk in a little. The foundry guy corrected the error on one of parts finally. Notice the o-ring groove on the perimeter of the bearing plates - guarantee no oil leak with this design!!

I'm estimating early September when the boxes will be available. I need to put the specs together for the Rbox. As for now the box is 4.5" (W) X 5.5" (H) X 7" (L) and weighs 15lb dry. Forward is 1:1 and Reverse 1:2 (kinda high for reverse but given the reverse gear selection and availability that's how it goes). Max output will 300 H.P on stock shaft splines (OEM Suzuki GSXR), but it can be configured for higher output (500 HP) using the high output shafts by Robinson industries (http://www.robinsonindustriesinc.com). They make high output transmission parts for motorcycle drag racing. I will customize your order if you need higher output.

Finally, I'm trying to put together the website http://www.powergearperformance.com so I can shift the product information over there as well. Also, I got initial specs on the supercharger, it will be based on the Mitsubishi 14B ( used in the Eagle Talon/ Eclipse) and BIG 16G (Lancer EVO) turbo-compressor wheel/Housing. Stay on the look out as this product continues to develop.

Ryan

KB: Rotrex isn't "low"cost. When the performance enhancement part costs more than the power-plant its expensive.
BTW, I might be building one of your minlanas soon :D

The reverse box build is very nice!!!

So, you can use all (six?) gears in reverse mode, right!?

Next mission, drive backwards with 100miles per hour!!

Angelo,

thanks.. Can't use all six gears plus reverse but I have an idea to do so in the future. The census on this site is that drivers need a box with OD + reverse for "on track" and regular street driving scenarios. A few others on this site have some fantastic plans for the OD+ reverse using an existing car tranny.

Frustrated due to setbacks..setbacks... Machinist informed me that machining the gearbox cover from the casting would be difficult and expensive so I've decided to design the cover from carbon fiber and place the aluminum bung inserts for oil filler/drainage. I no longer will set any "definite" dates when the revere box will be available because the machinist has me low at priority - but I will get it done. I guess if I placed a larger order for parts he could get things done cheaper and faster. I think I'll start off with five boxes and go from there if folks are interested. I'm becoming likehttp://www.moller.com or END OF THE WORLD nutcases; always setting dates but no product to show. Anyhow, the reverse prototype box does work in my busa car so at least I have something to be proud about.

Come to think about it, while I wait on some items from the machinist I may see if I can incorporate the overdrive (track/street gearing) into the design. I should have space and tooling to make it happen!! Driving a Hayabusa BEC on the streeting, crusing at 6000pm isn't too cool, 3000pm sounds better. What does everyone think?

So. .. I could swap the in/outputs and get a 2:1 reduction on reverse if I preferred?

oldejack, you could if you wanted. But after much deliberation tonight I think I have the configuration for the Hi/lo + reverse box with the current design I'm trying to make available soon. I'm excited!! :D

The Hi-Lo + reverse sounds excellent.
I really get tired of the high rpm drone on the highway on my bikes.
It doesn't take much hp to cruise so why spin the motor so fast?
I keep trying to shift into a higher gear, but no more gears...

It seems to me that your box should be ideal for those of us using shaft drive bike engines in our projects to reverse the drive shaft rotation so that we can use any differential we want. That is a needed feature since there are many ideal donor bike engines that use shaft drive. The shaft drive bikes are generally the "touring" version of the engine and tuned for more torque than the same engine in a sport bike. Unfortunately, (almost?) all bikes shafts turn the wrong rotation.

There's where the Honda S2000 rear differential comes into play for those touring bike-engines. someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the s2000 diff rotates opposite to others. Im using a 92' legacy turbo viscous 3.9 LSD on my busa engine (counter-clockwise rotation) for forward

The Honda engine rotates the right way.

Finally received some parts back from the machinist and I began to assemble one of the new reverse/overdrive unit. The machinists couldn't clean up some of bad cosmetics made by the foundry during casting. I will revisit the foundry soon and let them know so they can make things right. Below is a photo of the unit. The "Lo" gear will be the typical 1:1 ratio and the O.D "Hi" will be 1:2.21 (input 1 rev / output 2.21 revolutions.) Reverse ratio still in the works. Finished product will weigh right around 15lbs. Current weight in photo is 11.5 lbs.
