I was relaxing in the family car while my wife toured a local thrift store. There was also a small garage a couple doors down from the thrift store. While I was just watching the local passersby etc this young fellow came out of the garage onto part of the cement parking lot. There was an older front drive buick or something sitting on the cement. Anyway this guy went and got 4 garage jacks, put one on each corner of the frame and jack them all up in rotation. Once he had the height he wanted he then got 4 steel bars with U's on the end and placed them into the front shaft cross on the wheels were attached to and the other end into the cross shaft of the pad mount. It was pretty obvious this was to keep the jack up should the hydraulic pressure give out. He had the car up about 18 inches in no time then slid under it to fix whatever it was needed fixing. Once I got home I checked my floor jack and a bar would fit in there real easy as a prop or safety back up. Then I wondered about the idea itself, hoists and such are not cheap, but floor jacks can be usually found for a good price.
So I was wondering on what others thought about the safety of using a setup like this. It certainly looked safe, was a lot easier than jacking up a corner at a time and putting a jack stand under each corner. I am not sure it would be worth the effort or expense for the jacks, but it got me thinking.
