I have concrete poured up to the edge of my foundation, including around electrical conduit that goes under the house. And there is a water problem in my crawl space that seems to center where that conduit goes under the house (which is next to a downspout).

I'm wanting to cut my concrete driveway about 12" from the edge of the house, trench it, and put some drain pipe. So we're talking at least a 30 foot cut here thru concrete that I *think* is 3" thick with no rebar. I think.

Would a simple hand circular saw w/ a $50 diamond 14" wheel be sufficient? Or am I gonna want to rent a real concrete cutter for the day?

Thanks...

Tim W

Never tried that long of a cut, but I'm betting the $75 for the cutter rental will be money well spent. If nothing else, that concrete dust will kill your circular saw motor.

I have used both a circular saw (a low-quality one I also use with an abrasive disc for cutting cars up), and an angle-grinder with diamond cutters for concrete. I trimmed bricks on a 50' Allan Block stepped walkway, as well as the edges on 1200sqft paver driveway with these. I wouldn't use your best DeWalt here. Do wear a mask to protect your lungs.

A $129 diamond 10” blade in an old garage sale circular saw has cut 15’ of stucco on the side of a house including the wire mesh, about 200’ of paving stone edges, 24’ of angled cuts to make a trench under a garage door including one piece of stray rebar and two 24” cuts through a granite countertop and it’s still going strong. I cut everything dry, no water lube.

My first need was to cut the stucco which the rental concrete saw couldn’t do so I bought the blade. Then once I owned the blade I decided to use it up and have never needed to rent a concrete saw since. BTW, the circular saw doesn’t seem any worse for the wear after doing this work either.

I second the need for a dust mask and do not forget safety glasses.
