Post subject:  The Big List of Fabrication & Suppliers

So since I'm stuck here sitting in Wyoming in a blizzard I figured I'd build a Google Drive Spreadsheet listing as many links as I can find. It's completely editable so if anyone wants to add anything you're welcome to do so.

Probably because nearly every part we need isn't what's commonly available.

Though I agree with you on that, I've been a part of many forums that have lists like these and I feel it'd be beneficial.
Something as simple as a list suppliers for metals, bushings, brackets, tools, and whatever else.

I've been searching for a decent bushing supplier for the past 30 minutes and if there was a list I could've taken 3 mins instead.

Well, maybe now that you've brought it up, we'll get one started. Anybody care to make a contribution??? :D

Everyone has their preferred sources. I got most stuff from Online Metals and McMaster-Carr. I also got general automotive stuff from Summit, Speedway, and Jegs, Locost-specific parts from Kinetic, and M.G.-specific parts from Moss Motors. That's about all I needed, except for the rubber strip under the windshield, which I got from a Porsche place.

I started an excel spread sheet when I first began planning a build, than added each supplier, E-mail or address, a few with phone numbers, and P/N as I purchased a part. The part number may or may not helpful, but the supplier(s) should be, relative to the general type of part.

Ideally a spread sheet system with general categories, that would allow anyone on the forum to edit the spread sheet would be nice, and very useful to new builders.

Here's a suggestion, but it would involve some work by someone. For the moment, lets call him/her the "editor." If we all took the lists of suppliers we have in our own browser "Favorites" section and save them into a text file, the editor could go through them and collect them into a spreadsheet for use by others.

Make no mistake, this would be hours of work by that editor. Here is just a portion of my favorites (what fits onto a screen capture) for my Locost stuff.

As an alternate, people could enter their favorites into a three column spreadsheet with the columns named, "Website, URL and Comments." So, one row might be "Rod End Supply, http://rodendsupply.com/, Great source of rod ends, swedged tubing, high misalignment bushings." That too, would be work by each contributor, but save the editor a lot of work.

Cheers,

P.S. I would contribute, but don't have the free time to be the editor.

I'd suggest a simple web page for this, added to the site. I could write it, but someone who has access would have to install it. I like the idea of breaking it down by component categories.

@nick47
So, would you be willing to be the editor person, Nick? If so, what format would you like to receive the data in?

I certainly don't want to "volunteer" you if that wasn't your intent.

Cheers,

While we are at it could we also add something where we can contribute links to tech articles that'd be useful?
Ive got a very useful one for making ones own headlights from scratch that I'd like to share.

I feel like there may be a phpBB add-on for something similar. I assume that's what the forum is built on anyways.

While we're at it, we could also greatly revise the rest of this site...

I'm thinking of a page with component categories, click a category and it lists specific parts in the category, click a part and it lists suppliers for the part. A button so anyone can add a part to a category or a supplier for a part. Pretty simple to do, but does require access to the website and a small database, which pretty much all web hosts have.

I agree the site could definitely be upgraded. I know it already has a few other pages besides the forum, but who uses them? This site could have tech articles, donor cars pros and cons, book summaries/reviews, all kinds of stuff, a lot of it probably already out there on different websites. Right now we really only use the forum, although I think for most of us that's enough.

I keep the catalog from this company handy and go to it often. Don’t know what I’d do without it.
