UPDATE....

Improved lighting by trying this in the sunshine on a bright day (LED lights to follow). And cleaned the helmet, replaced the protective lens, and bought the cheater lens.

What ya know, I can see! Welds are much better. Not as pretty as they could be, but at least don't look like boogers or something!

I thank you all for your help. As does the collection of grinders in my shop.

Tim

 Way to go, Tim. I'm glad your welds are no longer a fecal matter. [ ]

Happy New Year!

getting old,
i was at a friends house the other day and the subject of first cars came up, i said my first car was a 1937 rover 14 sports.
his 20 something daughter then asked if i was born before 1920, i know i am no spring chicken but i am sure i don't look 100 years old, maybe i do, i feel like it sometimes.

@john hennessy
You've been living in the desert a long time, John. Maybe desiccation has taken over and you just look 100 (sort of mummy-like)?

Don't worry, with all the humidity in Florida, you'll eventually rehydrate.

Cheers, and Happy New Year!

lighting is #1.
Better to have the light far enough away that the sparks don't ruin the lens.
Consider a corded (no battery to go bad or charge), outdoor home security flood light mounted to a 2x4 stand for under $20 like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/100W-LED-Flood ... fresh=true
Thanks for the tip, MV8. I bought two of these in cool white and will probably buy a third. A huge improvement in working and welding on the car. The LED lights won't turn my welding helmet dark unless pointed right at my face and inches away. :cg:

I've mounted them to an old halogen light stand and also clamped them to shelving directly over my welding table. Still working out the best switching, mounting and wiring alternatives. Will need to remake the mounting br@ckets so the lights can pivot through a full arc.

But I still use the 1000 watt halogen light combo when I need to heat the garage.

Thanks for the feedback. The 1000w would be nice to have around here right now. It has been either below freezing or warm and wet.

Investigating, in theory, a 500 watt Halogen is roughly equivalent to a 100 watt LED.

However, I have 3, 8 watt 3" spotlights in my kitchen that really light up the place. I'm betting that the focus of the light is as important as the overall size of the bulbs? It's not the size it's where you point it?

Hi Duratec. Looks like ebay changed the page designation. So I did an ebay search for "LED Flood Light" and came up with what I bought: 100W LED Flood Light 12000LM Cool Warm White Outdoor Spotlight Garden Yard Lamp
While I was there I ordered another one. Seller was "gxfcde" both times. It was, as they say, a good buying experience.

So I bought a third LED flood light and finished mounting a pair to a salvaged halogen light stand. Here's the back-side:

Bent up some new br@ck^ts so the lights could pivot. Also changed out the original, vague, push-on switches to some that flipped with a good "clack" and wired-in 25' of cord. Much happier now.

The third LED, clamped to shelving over my weld table, has made a huge difference in weld quality. Lots of light without autodarkening my helmet.

Probably something to your "pointing it" point (and we could get into sheep/goat jokes here...)
But in my mind, the two big features of the LED's are minimal heat generation and zero affect on my welding helmet. Then there's the green thing, but I imagine the welder negates that.

Nice stand Tom. I need to rework the wrap-around brkt so it doesn't loosen when the angle is adjusted, just provide some friction to hold.

Tom, how hot do those LED lights get? Do they have a glass front lens? I have sop much weld and grinding splatter on my Halogen shop light, I'm afraid how plastic lenses might react.

Chuck, the lens is plastic. Tom and I have the same lights.

The idea is to have a strong light far enough away to prevent damage, but a piece of storm window over it doesn't hurt.

Chuck, MV8 had the answer -- plastic lens. The lights get a little warm on the backside heat sink, but not super hot. And they're bright enough that a little distance doesn't hurt.

MV8, I made friction blocks / spacers out of wood so the new brackets would clear the fixtures. Just used some scrap oak flooring for the spacers. The lights pivot on some Allen head machine screws, 6mm IIRC. I just tightened them a bit and the lights pivot easily and stay put where aimed.
