well, I picked up a new welder from Miller. I was at the Foodlion Autofair in Charlotte NC, and I was demoing the millermatic 140 autoset, and it was working wonderfully. Even the wife had a go with it, she also liked it. the price difference between the 140 and 170 was only $10!!!!! came with cart and regulator for $670 for the "show price."
i am so happy.

actually, their pamphlet had a 170 autoset on it, but they never made that model. so the 140 is what i am getting.

That's an awesome machine. I used one to practice on at the shop and am now having a hard time with my $100 ebay special. Wire gets caught up in the gun and it's very hard to get the feed and power adjusted. The one at the shop was dialed in for exhaust tubing and worked like magic.

I had hoped to weld all my mods today but spent the whole day taking apart my weld nozzle and getting the holes to line up--drill + dremel. I still need to feed the wire by hand the first time to keep it from hanging on in the nozzle but it is workable. The units with metal cable housing and smooth fittings = 100 time better than the plastic

Next year I will do a proper welder... Anyone considering a build, spend the money on a decent machine up front..

I just put a teflon sleeve in my Lincoln so I can switch between steel and aluminum wire. I don't do enough AL to need a dedicated machine for it or an expensive TIG AC unit. The teflon makes the steel wire slide right thru.
