Here's the miata how-to, I've done this on one rack and will be doing it on a second most likely. ....

You forgot the link I think.. wanna see. :)

Derp on my part...

link to depowering a miata rack

It's an easy job and the instructions are great. Somewhere online there is an instruction on welding part of the pinion together to get a perfectly direct feel from the steering but it will take me a while to find it again.

I'm sure there are differences in many racks but, yes, the principle should be the same. At the very least removing all fluid and capping the ports should take care of the hard feel since you'll only be moving air at the very most.

Leave the power steering on and try it first.

These threads all end up the same, got power steering? Oh nose, angels in heaven will fall if you use that - the auto transmission brigade will be along soon enough as well.

I mainly didn't want power steering to avoid plumbing from the front to rear of the ride

There is always the use of an electric PS pump, like from the R-50, 53 Mini Cooper. Used it on my race car and a few people convert to it on there BMW race cars. You can stick it right up front near the rack.

carwash! This thread caused me to join the forum because I've had a similar idea and you can obviously make some tubeframe happen. Any progress, or did this project sort of go by the way side?
