Hard to steer because you are trying to now push fluid though a no working pump when you are turning the wheel. Remove the PS lines and it steers with ease. I am also going with a depowered Mini Cooper rack on my build. Time will tell if it's manageable, but the car is a middy also and quite light so should be fine.

Awesome, this is excellent info. Thanks!

I wonder if the rack off this Grand Prix GTP is of any use to me. I will pull it while I'm dismantling and see.

Here's the miata how-to, I've done this on one rack and will be doing it on a second most likely. Pretty easy job and there may be a similar operation for the GTP rack.

If you use the same kuckles all around you may want to use the GTP rack because you'll need a fwd rack anyway due to the steering attachment location, and you know yours will fit with the ball joints/rod ends that come stock. If you're using a similar suspension design and track width as well then it's a no brainer, flush the fluid, cap the lines and weld up the slop then you're good to go.

I guess I need to locate an additional front end from a Grand Prix... to get knuckles, etc...

And here I thought the one in the first pics was the beginnings of an Abrams tank.

Here's a rear shot of the Abram's tank looking one finished... was rear steer. 2.5 ton rockwell axles, pinion brakes, etc....

And this shot is us wheeling in Johnson Valley after winning the Top Truck Challenge earlier that week.
