You can get a long-travel suspension kit for Miatas now, and the Exocet's put it to good use.

Any of you hooligans try something similar?

Not yet, but I can say that my second build is going to be a middie BEC with long travel suspension with a rally fighter inspiration.

It's not actually a 'long-travel' suspension, it's simply a set of raised damper mounting brackets on stock Miata lower control arms that give a ~3 inch lift. Suspension rate and travel are essentially unaffected. It certainly looks like a ton of fun though! I do believe they are also working on developing a true long-travel Miata suspension as well.

Not to pick nits, but what determines the upper limits of travel? If it's the bump stops, and not the shock assembly itself, wouldn't the raised brackets actually give you more effective travel?

Think of it as being similar to lifting the ride height with larger diameter tires, which they are also doing...Except that instead of increasing the lower ball joint vertical distance relative to the ground, it is increasing the damper lower joint vertical distance relative to the lower ball joint. Neither effects the actual damper length at ride height.

Well I just looked it up, and the bump stops on a Miata are sleeves that slide over the the shock shaft, so you are correct. If one had an old-fashioned suspension where the bump stop was a hunk of rubber on the A-arm, you could actually cheat more travel this way, but not in this case.

Ah, I see what you're saying. I guess I tend to take for granted that the cars I'm all familiar with have the bumpstops on the damper shaft.
