Neglected to mention that 26" is bolt center to bolt center, still better than 20".

Not sure if this has been posted on this forum already, but it seems applicable to this thread, at least for inspriration. This is a kit car that is a sorta modern interpretation of a lotus 23. Not exactly low cost, but it may provide inspiration.

Who knows if it is locost since their web site doesn't list prices or specs. You can't even blow up the pics into something large enough to really get a good look at it.

Ok here are some pics

http://www.lusomotors.com/pics/

Look at what they did for tail lights. A round trailer like light put in a triagular hole. It actually doesn't look all that bad.

No word on specs or prices yet.

Here's the info from LUSO

"Thank you for your comments.

Here is a small presentation of our company and some specs on our projects:

LusoMotors is located in Guimaraes, in the northern part of Portugal, a place known by the quality of the handcraft work and the engineering capacity of their people.

We are a young company with good human resources with all the necessary know how to achieve what we intend to.
The company is divided in three main departments, being one the kit car department, other the design department and finally the prototyping/modelling department.
So, LusoMotors is a lot more then a simple kit car company, selling unfinished cars with already seen models, with not so original designs… We have all three departments working as one and, as a result; we have the best designs with top quality products and original parts to resolve many construction and driving problems of today's kit cars.
We've came up with many new engineering solutions for old problems, and created new products to make car builder's life easier.

Having a different approach to what usually is found in this market, we want to help small volume or kit car builders, to develop new models, new designs or even to create new concepts for them, with low budgets and tight dead lines.
With a large 5 axis CNC milling machine in-house, we are able to provide fast and affordable prototype full scale parts, bodywork masters or even scale models. Usually this kind of services are only provided by those Italian well-known design houses, but at an incredible cost, only adopted by top of the line car builder companies.
But all of these services are not only directed to companies. If you are a car builder amateur and want a different car from what all people have, we are here to design, engineer and build it to your specifications, being it a small sportscar or a large supercar.

Currently we have in our range three different car models: The LM23, the LM Sev-N and the LM GT.
Very different from the beginning, all three models have their own "character" starting with the design, passing through the chassis and engine type or arrangement.
Our cars are made to order and low volume numbers will be made, to give all of our customers an additional guaranty of originality and exclusivity.

The LM23 is a design based in the long gone Lotus 23 model. It has the same lightweight principals and engine position, along with its small dimensions and design cues.
The chassis is developed to use both bike or FWD car engines.
This project was the latesr to see day light and was presented at the AutoSport International Show in Birmingham, UK, last January 8th.
It's a rolling prototype and we intend to sell all over Europe and other countries with enough interest. For that, we are looking for partners/dealers.

Here are a few pictures of it: www.lusomotors.com/pics and www.lusomotors.com/Photos

Also, here are some specs for the three mais projects at the moment:

LM 23 - Main Specs
Chassis: Steel tubular spaceframe, double wishbone with adjustable inboard dampers all around. Wilwood 11" disk rotors and 4 piston alloy calipers, the rear ones with mechanical handbrake. Quick steering rack, adjustable steering column and mechanical paddle shifter is standard equipment.

Bodywork: Fiberglass and carbon fiber parts, with front and rear removable "clamshells" to allow easy mechanical access. Barchetta design, featuring two seats and an engineered flat bottom and rear diffuser for aerodynamic proposes.

Engine: Bike or car origin, placed in a mid-rear position.
Length: 3,50 Mt
Width: 1,83 Mt
Height: 1,20 Mt
Wheelbase: 2,30 Mt
Wheels/Tires: 205/45 R16 at rear and 195/45 R16 at front
Weight: from 420 Kg, depending on engine choice

Prices:
At the moment, we are considering to sell our LM23 as pre-built model, without engine, only.
Several things can make the car be more or less expensive, depending on the options and choices of type of engines to use.
As you will know, this is the prototype and we are going to start building the productions models, though we will not make any kind of changes nor in the design or in the specs.
The first four models to be produced, we will sell them at a lower cost. The idea is to promote our product.
So, the final price will start at 15.000,00 Euros plus VAT for the first four models and then around 19.000,00 Euros plus VAT for the next cars.

FUTURE Projects :

The LM Sev-N is not another "sevenesque" model. This model is being developed for the road, to be used as much as possible, with a closed design featuring a fiberglass removable hardtop and a comfortable interior to allow many miles of quality motoring.
Car engines are the choice for this chassis, with many new items and details regarding new mechanical, as well as bodywork fitting and finishing solutions.
Fantastic quality is achieved in a car tailored for those B roads or to go work in style.
For the first time, it's possible to take advantage of this car during all year, being it a rainy day, a cold winter night or a nice summer afternoon.

LM Sev-N - Main Specs
Chassis: Steel tubular spaceframe, double wishbone with adjustable dampers all around. Sierra based drive, steering and brake components. Rear handbrake calipers.

Bodywork: Fiberglass, with front removable nose and bonet in the best "clamshell" style to allow easy mechanical access. Featuring two seats and an additional hardtop along the lines of the car.

Engine: Car origin, placed in a mid-front longitudinal position.
Length: 3,70 Mt
Width: 1,73 Mt
Height: 1,10 Mt
Wheelbase: 2,40 Mt
Wheels/Tires: 185/50 R15 front and rear
Weight: Though in developing stage, we expect it to be in the 550 Kg range, depending on engine choice.

The last model is the LM GT.
With this model we want to get to all the people that already have or is building a "sevenesque" model and want something different…
We are developing this design to direct fit to our Sev-N chassis, but with some small changes to some details, it will fit in many of the chassis available from different manufacturers…
This will allow a retrofit in existing chassis, though we are sure that we need to solve some big problems to achieve that goal.
But as we don't forget our design and prototyping services, we are always considering to negotiate our designs and products with all the interested companies that might want to adapt tem to their chassis and this is one of them…
This kind of approach gives extra time for those companies to invest in marketing and building their cars, and not spending time building masters or prototypes…
This particular design is being developed with the help of the latest CAD/CAM technology and features important improvements from what people usually gets from ordinary kit cars, not only in the design, but also in the building process improvements, quickly reflected in the final quality of the product.

LM GT - Main Specs
Chassis: Steel tubular spaceframe, double wishbone with adjustable dampers all around. Sierra based drive, steering and brake components. Rear handbrake calipers.

Bodywork: Two doors closed Sootingbrake, open roadster or spyder fiberglass body, with front removable bonet in the best "clamshell" style to allow easy mechanical access. Two seats interior, featuring a classic design along modern digital instrumentation.

Engine: Car or bike origin, placed in a mid-front longitudinal position.
Length: 3,95 Mt
Width: 1,75 Mt
Height: 1,15 Mt
Wheelbase: 2,40 Mt
Wheels/Tires: 185/50 R15 front and 205/50 R15 rear
Weight: Though in developing stage, we expect it to be from 600 Kg, depending on engine choice or version.

Among other things, we are proud of the new solutions we present to solve old or new problems, such as the reversing problem in bike engined cars or the latest fuel consumption in the city traffic issue.
For those, we have an inline reverse box with a well sorted arrangement, providing low weight and small dimensions but above all, no oil leaks, no vibrations or extra noise. In one word: efficiency.
About riding in the city traffic with a bike powered car, we thought that a new approach was necessary and an interesting hybrid electric kit is being developed. The goal is not to achieve high mpg figures, but to provide a relaxed drive through the city, with no noise and no pollution, allowing you to go where others can't go with "normal" cars and in the end, you also have a controlled electric reverse device fitted in your car, with the advantage of probably saving money in taxes due to the hybrid car you are driving, depending on the country rules, of course.

We are in various fields, providing our services to a new market niche, where low cost and quality of the services are paramount.

To finalize, here we present a few projects that we were responsible to various clients, from Portuguese to abroad:

Gee, this thread of "dauntless" was SOOOOOOO interesting.... and now, nothing?
Anyone know of the present status of the 23 project? I see info about the body on his site but nothing about the chassis....

I think that he mentioned somewhere that he had to pull off and work on another project for a while. I'd love to see updates as well.

Hi Stan:

Kind of late to this discussion but have you considered the subaru injected, twin tubo flat 4? Very light, compact and tons of power. Just a little "futzing" will net a very reliable 300 hp. Saw one recently in the back of a Baja bug convertible. Easily obtained Kennedy adapters to VW trans axles should net and easy adaption to more sophisticated racing spec boxes.

Engines in this area (Fresno) go for about $1200 including the cpu, at used Japanese engine importers.

Cheers,
Monte

Hi guys.
I had to join the forum this morning after reading this thread.
I too am building a Locost 23 based on a set of Merlyn Mk4T body panels.
I plan to use a Hawke formula Ford as a donor for suspension, uprights and steering and a Suzuki Swift GTi transaxle.
The big difference is I plan to make it a plug-in electric rather than a conventional ICE.

So far, I've got the body, the Hawke and the Suzuki and am in the process of cleaning up the Hawke parts. They are pretty rusty as the car was sitting in a barn for 10 years. I'm using electrolysis to clean off the rust and it's working really well. Here is a link to how it works. http://users.eastlink.ca/~pspencer/nsaeta/electrolysis.html

I did run across a recent kijiji ad for another Merlyn body if anyone is interested. It's up in Canada near Toronto.
