The Caterham kits start at around 40 grand, and others like Coverland7 are 1/4 that. Why are Caterhams so much, are they using gold tubing or something?

No gold tubing. It's just that they are the genuine article and coveland's are copies of that original design.

The Caterham kit is also fully inclusive and going together like lego. The Coveland (and similar) kit still involved a pile of part buying, adapting, etc.

Also Caterham is a "name brand" Seven.
