Well I took a drive up to see Chris from Haler Concepts this morning. He's got a shop about 100kms north of here. He had a demo locost in his shop - its in a car shaped form but most of the bits aren't really on. The side metal is riveted on but otherwise its on basically just sitting on for display. I was really quite impressed with the quality of the whole this. Fiberglass was amazing, welds were top notch. The 17" wheels he had one it were rather silly looking though. I think I might just go ahead and purchase the demo car parts off of him - its a sizable amount of cash but its got almost all I need (even a lhd escort steering rack). I just need to add my drivetrain, axle, spindles then add some seats and a windshield. I should be on the road by next summer easy! Not going to work as low cost exactly but should be a rather nice car. I think I may go for another engine though - if I'm putting all this expense then a better engine is the way to go. Possibilities are:

Mazda Miata - hard to source in Canada but likely do-able
Toyota Corolla GTS - reasonably easy to find and fit
60s-70s Alfa Romeo 1.3L - not as powerful as the other two but easy to fit (Weber carbs) and I know of one at a good price. Not sure on height yet.
Nissan CA18DET - can get ex-Jap. Good power but height and complexity worry me.

I don't want to cut the hood so only short motors need apply.

Wow, that certainly would shorten up the build process!! You might consider using the Ford Zetec motor - not too tall, very light weight, plenty of power/reliability, current spec motor, so lots of parts (and go-fast parts) available.

I might try a Zetec actually if I could get the T9 from a Merkur to bolt up. From what I understand a sump needs chopped to fit with book bodywork.
