If your looking for a lot of somewhat diffused heat, consider an air/propane torch. I took this

modified parts so they would screw onto a cut off welding tip
Image so it looks like this

Here is the final product

The propane torch orifice was removed and the air entrance holes were closed by soldering a copper tubing coupling over them. The smaller head will turn a small lump of steel a nice bright red.

It operates on about 20 psi of air and propane.

That is a respectable looking flame.
If you cover the air entrance holes, how is the 20 psi of air introduced?
Do you think this setup could heat a 6" section of 3/4 x .065 tube enough for a clean 90 degree bend?
Thinking about cost effectiveness, how many bottles do you guess it would take to do a dozen bends?
I wonder if the cost of the bottles would be enough to pay for the torch Lonnie found!

I'm asking because I like to have as much clear information on all possible options as I can gather.
Who knows, the knowledge might be useful, down the road, applied in a different way. :)

Ron, let me apologize for neglecting your question. For some reason, I did not see your question until today. Worse, your questions are quite legitimate and the result of the incompleteness of my post.

Ignore the photo of the Lp gas bottle. It's purpose was only to identify the source of the nozzle. The modified nozzle is used on an acetylene torch, using a 20 lb LP cylinder for fuel and compressed air for oxygen.

I think this should answer most of your questions. If not, I promise to pay better attention to enquiries this time.

Very clever setup.

I am not sure I would be heating a capped steel roll bar tube packed full of sand that may have some amount of moisture in it, if that is where this is headed.

A 1/8" vent hole would be sufficient to bleed off any steam. And the SCCA requires an inspection hole anyway...

The sand that is supposed to keep the pipe from collapsing would be getting forced out of the hole. Don’t know how critical it would be and I wouldn’t have it near the bend.

I’d make extra sure there is no clay/soil content to the sand, so a washed aquarium or beach sand may work, along with preheating by passing the packed tube through the fire with loose capped ends to help drive out any moisture and of course, nothing or any person in the trajectory that could be damaged by an end popping out during bending, kind of like catching the door lock in the gut as it punched in “No Country for Old Men”.

You guys are right. If all the necessary steps aren't followed, someone could be injured.
The plan is to use the white playground sand from Home Depot.
Bake the sand in a shallow pan in the oven twice to remove it's moisture.
Preheat the tubes over the forge.
Seal one end and tack weld pipe with a screw on cap on the other end.(The space between the large tacks should allow for venting of remaining pressure)

This method will be attempted for 1/2", 3/4" and 1" tubes. A tube bender with anvils will be used for the roll bar size tubes.

The seats are still a part of the plan. The only change to the plan is the use of Civic head rests instead of the MGB style. This will require that the top of the seats have a small flat area.

I've been working on MG stuff all summer. Picked up 2 1967 MGB GTs,

They both run, but need work to move under there own power. I need to manage at least that before work can continue on the "7" and it's seats.

JSArmstrong,
No more progress yet. I see I started this thread in 2014. Way past time to do something with it.

The MGBs have become a time sucking hole. I now have 2 1967 MGB GTs, a 1970 MGB GT and a 1978 Roadster to restore. I can't really believe I"ll be able to get to them all in my lifetime. I hope to have one 67 on the road, sporting Antique plates by mid September. After that the STRanger 7 gets all the attention until it's on the road.

I'll gather the elements required to bend the 1/2" tubes and post the resulting pictures in the next 2 to 3 weeks.
Maybe that will kick start things again.

Ron

Quick refresher.
These pieces will be bent using sand and heat.

Glad to see you're back at these seats, Ron.

Cheers,
