Afew years back, I was in a fiber optics class (working with fiber optic data cables). I ran across these nifty heat shring tubes with a small steel bar in them.

They are meant to keep a fusion welded splice on fiber optic cables rigid, so that the connection doesn't fail. Right away, I saw the advantage of these for wire soldering. I've used them in afew projects where flexing wires may be an issue with soldered joints.
