I seem to be having a few problems with the Miata stock instrument cluster. I am not recieving any responce on anything, no temp, no oil temp, no tach. I've been too busy driving to pay attention to the speedo, but that's mechanical, so that should not be an issue, I think. Which reminds me... I wonder what I did with the speedo cable. Hrmm..'

But back to the question. What's the best way to get mechanical readings on engine temp, etc? Even when running for 5 minutes or so, the engine gets pretty hot--I can see heat radiating off of it.

Now, I am running in limp mode, but that should not effect that, I don't think.

The engine is hot to the touch, the rear heater hose is hot to the touch.

I'm still not sure if my problem with the MAF sensor is either the sensor itself, electrical, or a vacuum leak between the MAF and the throttle body, as suggested on a seperate post. I adjusted the silicone hoses around a bit, no luck. I do have it rather jury-rigged, so I am going to order a few more parts to see if I have something not sealed well. Hopefully that will fix it.

I just don't want the engine to overheat or blow pistons/valves...

Make sure the red wire with black stripe to the cluster is intact. Also double check all of your fuses.

Is your radiator getting hot? If not your thermostat isn't opening.

If you're not sure your thermostat is opening the safe thing for now is to just take it out and let the water circulate freely through the cooling system.

Check to see if your ground wires are.

Problem solved... the power trace had contacted something metal, shorting it out. My dad repaired it, and now some of the gauges are working, and we were able to read the error codes. It appeared to want the purge solenoid valve plugged in. I removed it from the charcoal canister and plugged it in... no more codes :)
