The book plans for the spare tire mount work okay, but mine broke after just 30K miles. If you're still working on your frame and you're thinking of fitting a spare, consider using a 2" x 3/4" channel instead of the 2" x 1/8" strap shown in the book, which is apparently too flexible for the long haul.

Yeah I don't think Ron really thought about longevity much when he designed the "book" frame. ;)

Here's what I did - of course it's still theoretical in a sense because it will be a while before there is any risk of fatigue failure .....

If you go to the link you will see that I backed up the upper support with a square tube.

30K miles, eh? I'm more than impressed, Nick.

Thank you for the post. I have two 3/4" x 3/4", 16 Ga verticals almost identical to your set up in the plan for my chassis. I don't have a bracket designed yet, so this is a good caution for me. In my case, I'm using the Mustang donor's space saver spare, so it's a little lighter. It sounds like that's a good thing.

Cheers,

Damn! That front slip angle is way too large and the Ackerman is just a muddle.
