Just picked up a set of clamshells and was wondering how much clearance you all use between the tires and the fenders. I was thinking 2” but want to make sure. Thanks. Chad

Sounds a bit thin to me - my rule of thumb (before I decided to use cycle fenders) was the full suspension compression travel at the front, plus 1" to account for fender flex on bumps, etc. If your front suspension only compresses one inch, you'd be okay - if it's more, you need to increase the clearance, IMHO.

In my case, I was counting on suspension compression of 3", plus 1" for flex, for a total clearance of 4" between tire & fender.

Agreed. For clamshells, the fenders (including the br@ckets) must clear the tire when the suspension is fully compressed plus some margin. I would pull the springs off the coil-overs and put the car back down on the ground. Then place a 1" spacer on the top of the tire and go from there. Account for the bracket thickness between the clamshell and tire. Don't forget that if you have rubber stops on the coilovers or suspension stops, they will compress during end of travel and must be accounted for.

The front of my clamshells mount as high as I can, and still undo the bonnet latches. The backs are mounted half-way up the side of the chassis. I don't remember if I measured to see if the tires clear them or not. I was more focused on making sure the suspension bottomed before the chassis hit the ground.

If you put the rear of the fender on a pivot you can attach the front to the upper A-arm and pull it down as tight as will still allow the tire to clear when turning.

Half of the fender would be carried as unsprung weight, but it wouldn't be that much by comparison to the rest.
