I would like to install a Davies Craig EWP80 (Electronic Water pump) on Scrap Metal. It would replace the stock water pump to help reduce parasitic losses and save a little weight.

I would need an adaptor that would connect to the opening on the block where the the water pump connects to. Does anyone knows where I could get an adaptor or at least something that is close which I could modify rather than making one from scratch.

I can not upload photos at the moment :-(

Would it really save weight? Mine weighs a lot more than the OEM mechanical one it replaced. (I added it to help cooling at low vehicle speed)

The pump weighs 2lbs, the OEM one is about 7lbs. I also plan to replace the Alternator with a smaller unit and mount it at the bottom of the engine with a tension mount. That will allow me to remove the stock tensioner and pulley saving over 15lbs.

I'm mainly doing it to reduce the parasitic losses as it will have a single loop on the accessory belt to the altenator. The weight savings is an added bonus.

Looking at the pump housing, would the adapter just need to retain the gasket groove and the three/five mounting holes?

If the rest of the housing isn't needed or structural, machining an adapter wouldn't be too hard.

It would be eerily similar to the oil filter relocation plates I made for the Mercedes OM617 engines.

Some people never have anything except ideas. Go do it.
Emissions & fuel economy haven't exactly been areas of strength for past rotary power plants, but absolutely no one with a soul has ever cared.

Yes that is basically all I need. It would be difficult to make the gasket groove at home so I was trying to see if there was an off the shelf option. A universal adaptor would be nice where I could drill the holes myself to match the 3 bolt holes in the block.

Have you (or a close friend) got the capability for welding AL? You could cut up the old pump and weld a short nipple on it for attaching the rad hose. It might be easier than machining one from scratch.

I have the ability to weld auluminium but I would not trust it for a coolant hose.

The main downside I see in the electric water pump is that unless you have some kind of electronic speed (rotation) control your engine and rad will always receive either too much water or too little :)

Correcting my own post

electric pumps do indeed come with their own controller and make a good deal of sense.

I run one on my 2.3l Duratec. I fabricated an inlet to the block by making a tracing of the thermostat mounting face and transferring it to a piece of ¼" aluminum (6061). I cut it with a saber saw and finished it with a couple of files. I already had some 1 ¼" aluminum tubing. I cut about 2 ½" of it and drilled an according hole in the mounting flange. I had my local welder finish the attachment of the two. I used a beading tool to add the necessary bead. In order to assure an adequate seal, I polished the mating surface of the flange on a finishing stone and used a silicone sealant for the final installation. It works great. I'll upload a photo when I dig it out of the archive. Design note - make sure that the hole for the tubing will clear both the steering shaft and the air cleaner housing. I had to lower mine on the second iteration. This all presumes that you aren't using a thermostat. You won't run one with the D/C Electric pump as their controller negates the need for one. My setup works great.

I was thinking about making an aluminium plate style one as you mentioned and I could either tap holes and use the stock thermostat cover (no thermostat) or cut up the stock thermostat cover and have someone weld that in place.

I wont need to use their controller as my after market ECU can control the pump and fan based on coolant temperature.

As I recall, I considered using the existing housing but it was too difficult to mate the 1 ¼" tubing to it. That is the diameter that works best for all of the other cooling components. My ECU (Typhoon 2) also could handle the cooling functions but the D/C controller does a better job of programming the pump activity and also allows for a post-shutdown cycle to minimize heat sink.

Well I have been PMing Walt (300D50) and he is going to make me an adaptor plate. His price was very reasonable and much better than I expected.

@Papak, Is the controller worth the extra money?

I got it along with the pump on an eBay deal. It seems to work fine and I like the added post-shutoff activation.
