Luxury EV In The Works From U.K.’s Morgan
by Aaron Colter, September 7th, 2011

Luxury retro-automobile manufacturer Morgan Motor Company, out of the United Kingdom, has announced plans to develop a high-end electric car called the Morgan+E over the next six months.
We first caught news of the new car over on the Diseno-art blog, which reports that the Morgan+E will take it chassis from Morgan Motor’s Aero Supersports model seen in the photo below.

The new Morgan+E will replace the 4.8 litre BMW V8 gasoline engine found in the Aereo Supersports with a 70-kilowatt, rear-wheel electric powertrain produced by Zytek. That’s the company, you might recall, that’s helping automaker Gordon Murray with a super-efficient electric vehicle.
As part of the Niche Vehicle Programme in the United Kingdom, Morgan was awarded a grant of roughly $163,000 to make two of the electric vehicles, one for testing and one for demonstration purposes. The team of engineers and builders hope to complete both electric cars by January 2012.

If it's Lucas it will surely have a gasoline(petrol) engine backup. It's range will be, oh, maybe two leagues.

I bet if you set the "Mode" switch to "Flicker" the range would be extended by... Well, by how far you're willing to push it.

With Lucas electrics, aren't ALL switch positions "flicker"?

Nope, all Lucas switches come standard as a 3-position switch; off, flicker and dim.

I may have read somewhere that these industry-unique Lucas switches are used in the Lucas "die-time"tm (as opposed to run time) battery management. This industry first "die-time"tm control is a state of the art technique recently patented and trademarked by Lucas and will be integral to the success of the Morgan car. It is a off shoot of Lucas's decades long work in "smoke-time"tm research. It is little known that in the early automotive days, their historical work was in that area was originally top secret. The term "smoke time"tm had leaked out and was originally thought to be a workforce benefit. Lucas let the industry think that as they continued their laboratory work in secrecy on their real efforts. Until that fateful day when somebody literally let the smoke out of the lab. Nowadays, we all know the real work that was being performed in that lab. To this day, no other company can claim to send smoke thru wires! This is an undisputed fact! Despite it's technological advantage, keeping the smoke contained within the wires has remained a long-standing engineering challenge for Lucas and thier customers. Through their original "smoke-time"tm work, the name Lucas has remained industry-recognized. Over a century later, if one listens closely, one can still hear the name Lucas being brought up in discussions in automotive garages, pubs and other automotive venues around the world.

Today, Morgan's electric car, with the help of Lucas, is reported to be closing in on a "die-time"tm of 3 minutes. Great efforts are being made to extend that by 50-100%. They expect to be attaining that 5-6 minutes within the next 2 years. Lucas's "die-time"tm engineering team consists of 2 Emeritus engineers from the original smoke-time team :!: Similar success is expected from this alliance between Morgan and Lucas.
