That's actually pretty cool.

It looks like the fifth wheel mount was attached to the drip rail of the roof, which isn't as secure as I'd like things to be. In the case of modern cars, there isn't a drip rail at all, so something new would have to be done. I've seen those rack mounts from Yakima and others that can be added to a non-drip rail roof, but again, I don't know if you could make them strong enough.

That was good out-of-the-box thinking, though.

Cheers,

That is a really old idea, my old Popular Mechanics and Mechanix Illustrated magazines have all sorts of build examples.
I would think even the video dates from that period.
Still it seems like a great idea, which makes one wonder why it never took off.

I remember running across that video some years back. It reminded me of another similar concept vehicle
I read about several decades back, maybe in Popular Science or some similar magazine. But I guess the VW preceded the Steinwinter truck version.

I saw that Beetle on another Facebook wall. I love the concept.

$10 says you could attach one to the roll cage of a Locost.... ;)

Chuck - It seems like that truck would be a good candidate for an aerodynamic trailer with a boat tail of some sort.
