I am looking to update my current Garmin GPS unit. What I want is a GPS that I tell it where I want to go not it telling me where to go. In other words I want to pick a route before hand. Telling the GPS where to turn, what side road to take. what twisty to take, etc. And then it tell me what I put in it. The route could be several hundred miles. When I go out on a blat I don't always have a person with me to read the map. Does anything like this exist? Russ

You may want to look at this site https://help.routeyou.com/en/topic/view/36/download-route-on-garmin#placing-itineraries-on-your-garmin-with-basecamp . You may be able to fix the problem without a new GPS.

I use a Garmin 2599. with their software you can easily lay out a driving route & upload and follow with GPS once in the car.
Their new software works well and the whole process is seamless now. you can easily save your driving history which i find useful when i stumble on a good blat or explore new areas.
This is much better than early versions of their GPS (circa 2010) where you could layout your route in Google/mapquest, then transform the data before uploading... (compared to other manufacturers where you couldn't even do this).
oh.. i'm sure there is a cell phone 'app' but i preferr the gps.

Happy driving
