Ever notice how you can measure something twice, get it spot on, tack weld it, measure it, spot on, come back later and finish weld it then find that its 1/4 inch off?

Or, you dig around in your steel stack and find the last piece of steel that is big enough to make that special part, you cut it and then find that it's too short.

My wife says it sounds like I have a myna bird in the garage. She hears over and over "Well crap, how did that happen?"

I've cut over and over again and the piece was still too short. Russ

You should have been there when we were building the rear of my chassis for IRS. We'd measure three sides of the frame and they were level, and then the 4th wasn't, even though it connected to the other three... Or the gap between the angled frame rails (which were parallel) and the horizontal LCA mounting bars wasn't the same L to R.

I finally christened the whole rear of the frame "The Bermuda Rectangle"...

LOL. "the burmuda rectangle" that's awesome.

Yeah this is why I advocate finish welding the entire frame before attaching any suspension brackets. It doesn't matter much if the frame isn't square or symmetrical as long as your suspension pickups are properly located it will drive just as good. (or bad depending on your geometry/fab skills and luck)

Maybe those guys who build these things out of plywood were onto something. :P

+1 chetcpo! That's how I do it, and I'll likely never go back to t'other way. The finished chassis goes back on the build table for bracket installation. The purpose of the chassis is to hold the suspension brackets in alignment with each other (and provide a place to put the driver and to hang the hardware, e.g. engine).

I suppose you could do the brackets on one end of the car before finish welding the chassis, if you had a fixture strong enough to support the chassis by those brackets when installing the brackets on the other end.

i knew a carpenter that worked for codding enterprises. ..(a familiar name to those in sonoma county)
his job, 8 hours a day, was to walk around with an 6ft level and a 10lb sledge squaring up walls before the sheetrock went in.
never knew just how far you could knock a sill plate until i saw him move one almost an inch in one blow. i got my railings in and got the heck out of his way........

Yup, that's fine adjustment. Eight pound sledge, that's coarse adjustment.
