According to several sources (even CNN), Fernando Alonso will skip Monaco for a one-off (supposedly) drive with a Honda-powered Andretti Motorsports entry in the Indy 500.

News articles are quoting Alonso as saying he's excited about having this opportunity to run at Indy. I'm wondering if it's a way for McLaren to appease him about the crappy cars they've been giving him (in large part due to the puny Honda powerplants) in this last year of his contract. Or if it's a "job interview" with Andretti or Indy Car in general?

Interesting, either way...

No, it's just one less race to be embarrassed at. IIRC Monaco hasn't been his forte.

I'd just as soon he quit anyway. He's my least favorite driver.

I think that almost every driver would love to do Indy at least once. There is that. It's a bucket list thing.

Yep, I feel sure Alonso is thinking just that. He's won Monaco twice already, and given McLaren's showing last season and so far this year in F1, he's not likely to win Monaco this year any how.

Counterpoint to that is that he's really not likely to win Indy. It could happen, but odds would have to be against him.

It'd be kind of cool if he did win it though...
