It's not actually mine. A guy dropped this big boy off at my work last week for an overhaul. The parts came in today so I thought I'd post a few pics of the progress since it weighs more than a full dressed Locost.

This is the compressor housing. It's about 31" in diameter.

The discharge port is 8" ID. The impeller is 14" in diameter.

The weight on the entire unit is about 1420.

The claw on the discharge is a part of a quick disconnect system, 'cuz you know, you never know when you might need to swap out a 1400lb turbo in a hurry.

OK, you've probably guessed it's not actually a turbo. It sure looks like one though.

So...what is it?

Is it some kind of steam turbine or industrial pump? That's just crazy!

It's the wet end of a 35hp municipal wastewater pump (Flygt model 3102).

It's rated at 6000gpm at ~15.6psi (6 feet of head).

Most of them have volutes that look kinda like a turbo compressor housing, but this one is the first high flow model we've done since I've been there and it really looks like a turbo. Just a lot bigger.

I've seen one of those things tested once. Moves an incredible amount of water - and very quickly, I might add....

It's interesting / fascinating looking at big industrial equipment. I like the big diesel engines. The ones that use man-hole covers for each individual valve adjustment.

Let's see, is the lash set to 1 or 2 fingers clearance? Does it take an entire week to cool down enough?

Do they tie a rope around an apprentice and drag them thru the oil passages to clean them? ( not the apprentice, but perhaps you could do both ).
