Ha, thanks for the props guys.
I'm glad it provides motivation Joshua. Though I don't think it's something you'll ever be finished with it (read on ).

I still tell every one who'll listen they should build one. Think we have a couple chassis being built as we speak :D

I've done no performance tuning since last year. Just some minor messing with AFRs. Yes, still all stock.

Lincoln was a blast again. Running with the big dogs is always humbling, but a great bunch.

Unfortunately my square settup on 20' tall tires left bouncing off the limiter, costing me speed and time, and shifting to third proved no faster just more complicated. Still l, I was closer than last year so happy with that. Below is One of my pro-solo runs

I Had front sway bar bracket mount fail on my last run of the pro solo. Something I hadn't upgraded when put the big bar on. Thankfully, Jeff Kiesel had a welder and generator and got me back in the game for the national tour. Here a couple runs of the tour. the low mount is neat if you slow it down past the cones.

And the verdict is?

For those wondering what Bill is eluding to, since taking the HPDE school, I got my competition licence, and I have started to compete in Time Attack. Jump to just shy of the 7 min mark (or if your defrosting a cat, watch the whole thing as its not edited), you'll here something not quite right. And then at the 7:54 it becomes quit obvious.

As you can see I continued on some, as at the time I thought something was perhaps just rubbing as I had oil pressure And power (and no smoke like Bill suggests :ack:). Then I was thinking (hoping!) a stuck valve (lifter). I felt a bit daft in hindsight for not getting out of it right away but this was my first engine failure and did not know what to expect. Upon inspection at the track I found I have a very low oil situation (not good). And the oil there was was black and burnt. Pulle the cam Cover, all looked good so suspected bottom end. Either way, that was it for that track day. Still a great day, set FTD. I have the spare motor from donor # 2 sitting at home so at least I'd be ready for July  .

I'm sure you can guess what happened next.

Image
Found the oil pan to contain many nuggets.

Image

Stripped old motor (down to a long block) of all the good bits and transferred them to the 'new' motor.

Image

For lessons learned, I added a 19 row oil cooler an bigger and better oil filter and went to Amsoil Dominator racing oil to keep the motor happy.

Image

Buttoned it all back up, turned the key and… nothing. Got to change the started with the drive train back in the car :BH: which was even more fun with the oil cooler and oil filter adapter now in place. After the that, it started right up!

And a couple videos from the day. A couple of excursions in the first one (3rd session) towards the end , and the second (4th and last session) started of on a damp track. Set faster(st) times on every outing.

I can't tell from your videos - are you running an oil pressure gauge?

Hi Andrew. I'm using the Miata gauge cluster wich, for 1990 (to 94 I think), had a functional oil pressure gauge. But that is all. Unfortunately with the Gopro where it was there nothing to go back on. And I was not looking at the gauges in the corners where it counted most. Next item for purchase is a oil temp/pressure gauge that I can mount directly I front of me.

Is that Miata cluster that shows actual pressure or is that the one that says you either some or you don't?

Try to mount the gauge where the GoPro can also see it.

Competed in my first road race weekend. We (Winnipeg Sports Car Club) had our 18th annual vintage weekend at GMP (Gimli Motorsports Park). Got the opportunity to run with a bunch of neat cars in the vintage class. Wow what a lot of fun. Car was fantastic. Had a front fender bracket (the other one) fail right where it bolts up to the upper ball joint. The brake was right around the nut. No biggie. Just pulled them both off. Also had a muffler bracket fail (Not the smoothest of tracks, eh). That was easy enough to weld up in the pit.

Here is a link to a write up for the weekend.

As well a link to a pile of pictures form the event.

Here are a couple of races. the first is form Saturday. Started at the back. The second is from Sunday. My well worn RE71s (I was the only one on street tires  ) were getting greasy, made for more giggles.

So what was the actual failure on the last engine?

I Still haven't pulled it apart (its still not winter), but safe to say a spun bearing.

More Racing!

Autoslalom- Bonzi run on thoroughly warmed slicks during fun runs. Nearly 2 sec faster than I was during competition  .

Road race- Back at GMP, down to running in the low 1:03s. best lap was a 1:03 flat in quali. Buy comparison a 2016 Z06 set the best lap in time attack of a 1:03.3 .
Started at the back for this race as I was 'tardy' getting to grid.

Unless the oil level was low before you left the pits (unlikely), what has changed to prevent the same thing from happening again with the new engine?

To be more blunt (my specialty), unless something's done about supplying a solid source of oil to the pump, it will happen again. Many times I read of builders using junkyard engines with the thinking that if it breaks, they aren't out much money. With that thinking, an engine will be needed after every event since nothing's being changed to address root cause. The real costs can add up irrespective of engine cost, what with gas, food, and lodging expenses for the failed weekend - cheap engine or not.

That said, maybe the oil system was changed and I missed it (the oil cooler doesn't address a lack of oil).

Hey Kurt. Thanks for the input. I didn't change anything to ensure supply mechanically. aside from ensuring the motor isnt leaking fluids. I am now very diligent about checking fluids after ever race now and keeping my oil level topped right up.
The previous motor did not consume oil at any rate that would give me cause to worry. But there were several factors that could have led to its demise due to low/overheated oil.
I hadn't checked the level since the first session before going out on a double session, I was feeling some what blindly invincible. BAD! Not any more!
I did have a couple of very minor Leaks (more weeping )
I was using off the shelf oil (synthetic)
I did not have water cooling on my turbo as I had cracked a line and had not yet replaced it.
Had a minor coolant leak.
My water temp was a bit higher than usual. Which inignored. Either I wasn't getting enough. WTer cooling causing me to over beat the oil or not enough oil cooling, causing me to tax the coolant system.
I Dont know if I lost or consumed oil during the day prior to the failure.
The motor in the car now is again low Milage (about 65k miles). And I replaced the seals and line before putting it together. It's bone dry so not losing any oil. I've only had to add .5 quart over the last couple road race and AXs.
In any case I'm chalking it up to me not having enough respect for the abuse from road racing. I let things get a bit ragged and sloppy and it bit me. I now have a healthy respect for work the fluids systems do.
Though I'm open to alternate opinions and suggestions.

Overheating is more straightforward to fix than low oil level (assuming it's wasn't just a quart low). If it really was low oil level and it wasn't low at the start of the day, then it's getting flung away from the pickup. Fixes include an extra quart (sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't), a baffled pan, an Accusump, and the ultimate, a dry sump setup.

With a stock engine under boost of any kind on the track it's only a guessing game as to the problems. If the engine isn't built for it its most certainly headed for doom. Huge difference from street to track. Your on the boost so much more just pounding the lower end. A winter engine build would be a sweet project from the main bearings on up.
