It's starting. I have the SR20DET engine, ECU and tranny. I also just aquired a 1990 5L mustang diff and spindles.

Looking forward to the build. I am getting the 1"square tubes. I am using .125 wall thickness as it is easily accessible and very cheap.

Any downfalls other than it might be a bit on the heavy side?

From my other thread, thanks for the info on choosing frame width. Looking up the 1990 mustang tracking.

Things to do in the upcoming weeks:

Determine the max width I can make the chassis with the mustang diff.
Start working on front end geometry with the mustang spindles.

Looking at replacing the drums with disc's. This is a 500.00 job. Is it worth it I am wondering. I don't think it will make a difference in braking, just the weight factor.

Look at RacerAl's build. He recently converted rear drums to discs and the weight was nearly a wash. If you are going to do a drum to disc conversion it only seems justified if it's performance you are after.

Not worth it, IMO. Brakes are definitely not the weak point on these cars, and I don't think disc brakes will save you much weight, if any.

Ok then, I will leave it. I wont need extra braking power and the weight difference is minimal, so I will leave it and on to the next step.

It's getting really exciting now.... Picking up wheels off the mustang today or tomorrow and the steering rack.metal for the chassis should get real soon and start the chassis.

Good luck with your build. All the kool kids have SR20DET powered Locost's

If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower.

I went for 1.5" Square 14 Ga (2.4 mm or something 0.100" aprox) and is pretty thick.
Although easier to weld.
I reckon 0.120 (3.2 mm) would be a little bit too much.
But that´s just me.

Go with disks if you can. I think the difference is in how the brakes feel and how they produce brake force compared to pedal effort. The disks are more linear and a if things are setup right less prone to lockup.

On the other hand this is a performance issue that you may never get to. Maybe you can bring the price down somehow..

Since I was mentioned earlier I will pipe in, yes the weight difference between drums and discs was a wash, almost the same weight.
But the hugely improved adjustment setup I have using the rear proportioning valve as well as my Wilwood pedal setup is way better than I could ever got with my drum brakes.
That alone has made it a worthwhile swap for me, the new disc braking system is way easier to setup and much more controllable during everyday and hard braking.
One of my better decisions.

Al

Woohoo another sr20 build. Let me know if you have any questions on that engine. Been a nissan guy for quite some time.
