That was a really cool video but holy cow does hill climb look dangerous. I couldn't help but see all of the trees and even a farms metal fence on the side of the road. It is very similar to tracks back in the 50s and 60s that killed so many f1 drivers.

Looked like your car did very well and sounded great. Be safe!

I think i'd prefer trees to slow me down on the way down but I don't know that I really want to find out either way.

I managed a couple of FTD's and firsts in our local hill climbs. I made one mistake. The car failed to turn in once, maybe it was a little airborne. Had to find a little soft spot between boulders lining the road. It worked, but I left the four wheels behind and the car went airborne, kicked up losing the tires I think. That hurt. A few car lengths thru the air and hit an oak tree head on some distance above the ground, then dropped.

Real trees don't have any amount of give. For our cars anything more than a very, very small tree is a pretty big deal. That road looks easy to cache a tire on if you drop it over the edge. If you mess up, you have to leave the road head on.

You're probably best off imaging the trees we have here, just to keep your self safe!

Have fun, you're doing great!

So all this talk about cages... now it's time

My little excursion that went about as best as any excursion can go...

3 other climbs without issue - this was the first one where I was really feeling confident and pushing the car hard all the way up the hill - the last real corner got me :( I'm alright, the car isn't too bad off and will get fixed up before the next hill in 3 weeks...

This was the first hill where I flipped the go pro under the rollbar... good thing!

blackberries, aren't quite ripe.

Glad you're ok and the car isn't too bad

Glad you're OK. These hill climbs with the forest look a lot like what we have here in New England.

What do you think happened? It looks like maybe you were wide from the previous turn and didn't/couldn't get back to the left or center of the road? The hill climb I go to here is pretty narrow pavement with camber so you often are closer to the middle of the road...

Good luck putting it back together. I can't run my local hill climb in my FF anymore. They require a lot more cage than they used to for the fast cars.

Glad you're alright and its repairable. Once you start running hard around immovable objects I think it becomes difficult to argue against a cage.

Any engine damage? What was your brake bias like?

Awesome video. Glad your ok. Hows your neck feel? When I flipped my kart my neck hurt for 2 weeks. Any pictures of the aftermath?

+1 for pictures of how the car look after the crash. Would be nice too see if there was any damage, where and if we could make changes to strengthen our frames.

First and foremost - you're OK, the car you designed did it's job of keeping you safe.

Secondly - the car you designed is made up of steel, rubber, bits and pieces, nuts and bolts, it can be repaired.

Remember - "If man built it, man can fix it"

And yes it was an awesome video.

I love reading your thread, and I'm glad you're OK after that!

I had a little excursion that lead to the demise of my wrx (crushed almost up to the windshield on the driver's side), and therefore went straight for a full cage on my locost.

I'd be interested to see how the car held up after the off, but understand if you wish not to post them. I'd like to see what parts gave way...and what did not.

Anyways, as always, look forward to the new and improved Tongboy locost.

Yo, Tongboy!
I just saw a re-post of your hillclimb/crash video on my FaceBook feed. Got me to wonderin' what you've been up to since then? Got any news, pictures, race reports, fables or outright lies you wanna share? We'd love to hear from ya...

I can't believe I forgot to post pics of the aftermath!

I cut the rest of the broken body panels off and raced it 3 weeks later at bible creek - I was a big old weenie though after crashing it a few weeks prior. I was still outrunning my codriver but not by nearly as much as I should have and I was way off pace from the year before and the rest of the pack.

The only time I wasn't giving two thumbs up and laughing about it

hooking the tow bar up

Farther down than it looked

front end destroyed

oil out the air filter and some bent/broken control/suspension parts
Image

rear body bent to hell

it got a new suspension tie rod & mounting point on the front outboard since it tore the mount off. we later found out the steering arm on the upright was bent (bent the cast iron hub but not the aluminum connecting rod) chipped a tooth in the steering rack (giant circle track box, wtf?)

put some new oil in the motor and replaced the filter and it was fine.

bent one of the seat belt tabs.

What have I been up to since then? not racing! :( Bought a new house with a big'ol'shop. moved everything from the rented shop in to the new house and have barely even fired the race car up since the move ~20 months ago. House projects distracted me for the first 6 months and then starting a new business has kept me distracted since then. I wont be racing this year either, maybe next year if things keep going well...
