Sorry I missed your earlier post. I did a fairly detailed write up during the R1 project.

Good job!

I see you've made a few orders from Rock Auto.

Looks good Gavin. I was wondering if you were going to try it alone. Glad you had competent help. Couldn't have done mine without an extra pair of hands.

Cheers!

I bought 4 bonnet latches on Amazon. Do you guys think they are too big? Also, do you see any issue with using 4 of the same type of latch? Caterham uses a spring type latch in the front and one similar to these on the rear but I don't know why.

I used the spring type that Caterhams on the front at all 4 corners. They help pull the bonnet tight. Never a problem.

Been a while and don't recall just who I bought the latches from. Probably these guys:

If you have a problem dealing with China this domestic vendor has these:

YMMV

Good luck.

Did anyone else notice the half moon openings are facing the wrong way on the DHGate latches?

No I didn't. Now I'll have to check my latches.

Mine are the half moon type, not the circle type. If you think there is a problem with halfmoon being upside down and you really want to anchor on the flat mount the latch so they pull down instead of up. Not an option with the circle ones.

I have mine pulling up. The tension holds them in place quite well. Never had one pop open like I have had with over-center latches.

Took a couple of pics that aren't the greatest but do show them in place. YMMV

I wonder if the intended purpose of the flats is to allow the 2 holes to be placed closer together. Not for clamping. The flat allows the back side of the mating part to fit the flat while the circle part of the hole contacts in two points. This "feature" allows the holes to be placed closer than round holes would.

Larry, I wonder if the reason you had issues with this type of latch is due to bending of the thin aluminum. I mocked up the setup with some scrap and was amazed at how easily the latch opens due to the "misalignment?" of the two sheets under tension.

Has anyone else had similar experience to Larry? Or any other positive or negative experience with various latch options?

Gavin,

The ones I had were not nearly as robust as the one pictured. Pretty sure the were intended for cabinets etc. I was pushing them beyond their design limits.

Good luck with yours.
