Finished up welding on the frame (until I find something I missed).
Using POR 15 metal prep I treated the frame, it is now etched.
Now ready for caulking, then paint.

Painted frame today. I'm reminded of Henry Fords words to Edsel along the lines of "I don't care what color you paint the cars as long as they're black when they come off the assembly line".

Looking good.

Do you know why Henry Ford wanted them black?

Did you spray paint it, Perry? It kind of looks like there is some overspray on your rotisserie reinforcement at top. Do you have a spray booth too?

It looks good, anyway.

Cheers,

Hi Lonnie - I brushed on the black, and used rattle can hammered metal paint over the black for the tunnel sides and seat back metal.

On this build they are 12" It all depends where you decide to locate the trailing arm mounting holes on the axle and the frame.

Another day in the shop. Installed the bushings in the upper and lower A arms. Installed the A arms, lower BJ's, upper BJ's, Rack and pinion, TRE's, and spindles. Again I am using Gr 8 NF bolts and Stover nuts like on the previous builds. Did a preliminary set up on the caster and toe in. Punched the old races out of the rotors, installed new races, packed brgs with grease and installed in rotors with new seals and dust caps. Installed new callipers and brake pads. Installed coilovers all 4 corners. Put the wheels on - back to being a roller.

Just a bunch of pics.

You may want to check the upper front control arm bracket. It looks like you missed the vertical weld on the bracket? Dave W

Hey Dave, sure looks like it, but it's the camera playing tricks again. I don't know if I will ever paint another frame black again, hard to see when working on it.

That notch in the frame upright that the rear of the upper control arm connects to gives me pause. (actually it gives my pause, pause)

Or is that also an illusion? (or an old pic?)

That's notched for the steering shaft. I've refer plated it and once the shaft is in place there will be a refer hoop that bolts over it.

I had to do something similar, as my steering column needed to pass right through one of my horizontal 1" square tube members. Here's how I dealt with it:

Attachment:
steering column frame pass through crop.jpg

There are welded-in nuts underneath, a bolt-on angled plate underneath to hold the steering column in place, triangular gussets on both sides, and a frangible sleeve between the column & frame to allow the column to move in the event of an accident. The "hoop" over the column was made from 1" square tube - about a hundred cuts from underneath with a zip disc, curved it all to shape, and welded up the hundred cuts. It ain't pretty or elegant, but it's VERY strong. I plan on smoothing the welds to make it look better (I already did that on the hoop - the "hundred welds" aren't even visible anymore!

Painting bits and pieces. Fabbed up the front top tunnel steel cover plate and the aluminum top tunnel cover piece. This weekend I'll be picking up my aluminum sheet and windshield channel. Next step is body work.
Some picks. I've discovered one thing - I'll never paint a frame black again, I can't see sh1t when it's all black and pics are poor.

Looking good, I agree with you on the black. I couldn't finish the body without driving it first.
