So I had a very nice lady from the state DOT call me about my paperwork today. She called to ask me about redesignating the car from homebuilt to Replica. You would have to read the statute and understand why I picked Homebuilt. The replica needed a Vin number from a replica company which I didn’t have. She knew this and said that it wasn’t a big deal and she made a Vin tag for me. (I sent pictures of the car). If it would’ve been kept homemade it would’ve had to comply with 2018 DOT standards. As a replica I don’t even need an inspection. So she sending me my Vin tag that has to be put on and then signed off by a law enforcement officer, then I take that and send it back to the DOT showing that the Vin tag is properly placed. After that they will send me my tags and my title so she said in about two weeks I should have the whole process completed because it all goes through the mail. Wisconsin just became user friendly all of a sudden.

Great news, Steve! Did you start the process at the local State Patrol office or at the DMV?

Ah Keith. Your going to want to go this way. Right through the DOT. Print off the forms for title application and the hobbies plates and file as replica. Send in receipts for your engine, tranny, rear end and the Vins for those items. Rear end probably won’t have a number. Take a pic of all 4 sides of the car. Send in that stuff with the paper work. Homemade route is a bag of worms.

Sure wish it was that way here! Strangely, here in BC, a car that is built to accurately resemble a bygone model must be registered as a "Ubilt", while one that is designed specifically to NOT resemble any vehicle ever made previously is registered as a "Replicar". How's THAT for logic? Unfortunately, the term "Ubilt" is commonly considered to refer to weird, one-off, hopelessly pointless, badly constructed, monstrosities, whereas "Replicar" raises connotations of precise, accurate, painstakingly constructed beauties. Of course, the opposite is true, but that's what we're stuck with.

No one in our Motor Vehicles branch or provincial insurance system has ever been able to explain the reasoning (or lack thereof) in our designations...

Also, unfortunately, the registration & inspection of "Ubilt" cars is very intensive & intrusive. I'm planning the process roughly 2 years in advance, lining up inspectors, facilities, etc., in hopes of getting through the process as painlessly as possible...

Wow, your DOT lady actually called you to do you a favor. What a concept!

I'm impressed. It must be the cheese up there, eh?

Cheers,

Phase 1. Send this back with tax owed on the build based on receipts I sent in $50.69. Which I have already paid taxes on the items that they added up. I’ll just pay the 50 bucks rather than fight it that’ll take forever. Phase 2 is receiving the plates and title hopefully in another week

According to the VIN manual the 13th digit denotes a pink interior. Is that true???? Congrats. Paying tax on something you already paid tax on is crazy. Sounds like something the IRS would come up with.

You know the state lives by a different set of rules. I sent them the receipts from major componants which where all bought in state. Whatever I just want the damn tags and be done. 2 month process and the weather is prime.

I went and picked up a temporary plate to not take a chance of the real one coming tomorrow. I got home and the title was in the mail, how cool. With a plate number on it so it won't be far behind hopefully. So now we can rip around carefully this weekend. All I have right now on insurance is a signed policy turned in not paid for yet. My agent just wanted the policy signed until he figured out where to send the check. I don't know why that was in question, I just do what i am told to. insurance is through Conelly & Skelly. $122/yr full coverage. value on the car is $12K. I tried more and the policy tripled. Guess I found the break point.
