Long header runners, large diameter tubes into a small 18" X 4" muffler says it's going to be fairly loud. We're pretty similar. I have longer runners but the collector, tubing, and muffler look to be the same size. Loud but with a great sound.

Mine originally was pretty loud, so much so my wife wouldn't ride in it. I put in a baffle with some stainless steel wool and it quieted down but I lost some power when i did it. Might have to pull that crap out.

Yup. That's the same size muffler. This is 2.5" after the collector.

Has anyone found a car cover for a 442?

Steve, nice work, but that is going to be loud. The left side pipes are worse as you can literally put you hand up the end of your exhaust pipe from the driver seat. But the use of a V band will make building a new muffler section easy. I am doing that over the winter, but at least my Honda powered setup has the exhaust on the passenger side. I would consider putting a couple of mounting points in the lower frame rail before you skin the chassis. It will give you more options down the road for different muffler options.

It's way too late for you, but for the benefit of anyone else confronted with the exhaust on the same side as the driver... if you're building the header from scratch, there's often nothing preventing you from running the exhaust under the engine and over to the passenger side.

Your right. I looked into it. I didn't really want to give up the traditional roadster persona. I also didn't want to pay for the stainless oval tube. That stuff is crazy. Giving up ground clearance too wasn't to crazy about. I love the way Caterham sound. I want to work in that direction. This muffler was cheap so after I know where I am at I can make adjustments this winter.

Looks fantastic. Sorry about your "welding scare." That must have made your heart sick at first.

Serving suggestion: use water, not coolant on first start-up. That way if things leak, or need to be disconnected to remedy a problem, you won't have expensive, smelly coolant all over the place. Dogs love to lick it up too, which definitely isn't good (poisonous), if you have one.

Cheers,

I like it. Thank you. I am on it. Why I didn't think of that is beyond me. Those who are closest are blind.

Steve,

I used a P-trap kit from the hardware store for my return line. I have had no heating problems being this close to the header.

Fabricated a support to help keep it off the header.

Cheers!

Larry here we are :P

Well that worked out nice! And shiny! Looks factory. That is a problem with using FWD engines in a RWD build. Having to be creative with plumbing.

Your experience working pipefitting shows up here big time. Like the rest of your build it's very 'clean'.

Your problem is more involved than mine was but it looks really, really good. Now let's hope Chuck's cautions prove unnecessary.

I did a WUE tune on mine the other day and got the temp to just over 200* and all stayed in place. Then took it for a drive. Good weather days are going to be rare now.

Thanks Larry. I really don't know what went on here. Good thing you can't pick apart my welding too much. The fitting I don't do at work very much, mostly welding. Here the fitting was easy and the welding really kicked my butt. I need a foot pedal and don't. My bare bones machine doesn't have the connection. Stainless isn't forgiving like steel. I am sure at sometime ill redo the exhaust when I get the noise factor figured out.

Don't know why, but after seeing your post of yesterday I thought you were doing a Miata engine. Went back to pages 18 - 20 where I saw you doing your engine build. Still did not find exactly what Ford engine you are using.

It does look a lot like the Zetec I have. The question I have for you is: Is that a stock intake manifold and throttle body? My engine came without an intake manifold, which I thought to be plastic any way. Have an intake from Burton, could use Weber or EFI. Have not yet decided since I am now on a different project. Your set up looks more compacted.

Thinking ahead again.

Dale this is a ford escort gt engine made by Mazda. It's a BP series engine. I chose it because it was a 1/3 the cost of a Mazda engine. And it bolts right up to Mazda tranny which is light (40lbs) or so. I think your Zetec is a Ford design inspired by this engine. The intake is Mazda it's a lot cleaner design than what Ford had. More compact too. This is EFI so yes it is a bit more involved. Doesn't seem too bad though. Haven't done the first start yet either.

A little repurposing. I also got a tach signal finally from the distributor. That took a little screwing around and a recommendation from Megasqirt as what direction to go. Nothing was working with this set up. So now i think i have to play with the settings a little, put my fuel pressure regulator on and fill coolant and fuel. getting close.
