Hi! Ive been lurking here for years and finally signed up

I've always loved the ultra light lotus 7 style stuff. my background is in tracking and racing Honda's , and I still do that (NASA, Scca w2w, and I'm the Motorsports director for the Gridlife series, so I'm at the track a lot) , but I stumbled upon an incredibly unloved old , one off (the only full body car they made, and the only racecar they have made) Fraser. It's a boutique new Zealand company that builds nice cars.

In a previous life, when new, Steve millen drove this one a few times, but I guess it was always problem riddled. Miss fire prone due to the exhaust header being basically wrapped around the distributor, and I think that's what killed it finally for me on the first weekend I had it at the track, but oh my was it unbelievable fun to drive

Then I bought an R1 engine...

How it looked when I got it . Bolt on roll bar will be rebuilt, it's a cobbled together piece now. Some other crash protection will be added too, for driver and fuel cell.

A pic from Fraser cars from when brand new. Close out panel for "passenger" side got lost sometime in the last 20 years, and the paint job got a lot uglier!

Steve millen driving it in the 1993 (I think) wangharei (spelled incorrectly I'm SURE) street Races in new Zealand, a street circuit race I believe.

Me driving it at Gridlife Blackhawk Farms track day picnic this August. Oh it was fantastic. (I went through it all prior for safety, put new-er Hoosiers on, and new fluids, etc)

I think part of the reason it exploded (actually melted a Piston, bottom end is still useable with hone/new piston) is it's a CRAZY 4age. I believe it is most of the parts of an old formula Atlantic engine. It's also (it turns out) a twin disc low inertia clutch, and TRD close ratio trans. It's dry sump too. I think it did not like the regular gas I put in. (was told "I think it's just a stock engine" )

I'm not able to really play with something that nuts and expensive, and pay my bills, so it'll get sold off or mothballed, and the r1 will go in. This is strictly for fun and smiles

It's hot crazy huge brakes. 1.25" thick, 12+" rotor. They work well . Incredible brakes....must be a lower temp pad as it had no bite issues , with a light car and such huge brakes. It did no noticable wear to Hoosiers in a half dozen sessions too. I love having a 1000 lb car!

There is a lot to really like underneath, despite the neglect. It'll be a LOT easier to work on with a bike engine, this Toyota is JAMBED in

Forged everything in bottom end...

I love this angle. So much.

Unsure how I'm going to do the paint (the terrible yellow is basically falling off)....but I'd like to do it "original" for itself and restore to the tartan theme. It'll have to be DIY though

It got loud at the track for Emma. Mommy covered her ears

That's all for now....bike engine progress soon!

Only one pic?

Convert to crank trigger ignition and ditch the distributor entirely.
You already have Carbies so only need to control ignition.
Probably able to adapt later model Toyo parts for a lot of it.
Even the cheapest Megasquirt should be able to handle it?

Had trouble with forum , then the 3 year old was being crazy at the Christmas party!

Pics will be edited in a minute...

I think because it was my first post, and needed approval or something. Posted it to go look for image links , and it disappeared, twice

It's much better if you upload the pics directly to the forum as they'll always display and they will stay with the thread.

Not one picture is displaying when I open the post.

Very similar to a Mallock.

It's super easy to upload to the forum, you just have to remember that they display in reverse order. So you load the first one last and the last one first.

You can even comment on each picture individually or load them inline with your text to make it even easier for us to follow along.

Very cool car, I am looking forward to seeing the build. A race car with both Paddle Shifting and 10,000+ RPM's sounds very exciting.
Question how safe is that add-on to the roll bar? Is that sufficiently safe in a rollover?

Too bad you're giving up on your Cosworth, err Toyota. Toyota borrowed some dimensions from the Cosworth, like valve diameters and angles, bit it's its own engine. I wonder what it will cost to get the motorcycle engine in though? Are you going to adapt a driveshaft to the engine sprocket? Are your ratios going to work out? Because of the offset to install it may not be much smaller in the car... I would mock this stuff up before I sold the 4AGE. Good luck!

If you dress your daughter in shirts with ferocious dinosaurs, it' no wonder she grows up to like race cars!

I'd call a three-year-old, wearing a helmet and sitting in a racecar at Blackhawk "Parenting Done Right." Good on ya!

Keep us posted on the (re)build. Lotsa pictures!

Good luck with it!

I like the car; it looks like a lot of fun. I am very interested to see the adaptation of the motorcycle engine to the existing driveline. I'm also curious about the weight difference when it's all said and done. Please keep the pics coming.

As for the pics, if you can make them a little smaller it will be easier to see.

On the Honda, are those solid rods supporting the steering column? If so, are you at all worried about what may happen to them in an accident? In my head, I can see those breaking losing and becoming spears.

Ken

Still gathering parts and stuff for the R1 swap, and doing lots of reading here and elsewhere. The Fraser roll bar will need completely redone after my w2w Civic is Done fab work wise.... adding a rear halo section over the fuel cell too, under the body work, and some side impact protection under the body work too.

I'll be using a Hawk machine adapter on the r1, it's currently sitting on top the pile of parts.

Parting out the 4age setup slowly to pay for it all, and it'll be pretty easy to cover all the r1 swap (500$ for most of the r1 parts from a friend makes that easy!). Since minimal actual progress on that, here is a pic of the Civic. Lol

Two of the classes I intend to race in (scca STL and NASA HC2) require oem pedals but allow modifications for driver comfort. Since I have moved the seat 15" rearward, I needed some comfort mods. These are the mods!

And the steering column bracing is about finished, just need to weld it all up. Dimple die'd it all, and many electronic items will be mounted on it. No more Spears!
