I've gotta ask...what did you use as a transaxle for this car?

(Already planning my middy BEC to V8 swap...hehehe!)

I'm curious about the Porsche transaxle picture above. Why are the Ring and Pinion flipped?

On a Porsche, the engine is behind the transaxle. My setup the engine is in front of the transaxle. Without flipping them I would have 5 speeds of reverse and one going forward. If you look at the picture, the shaft coming out of the end of the transaxle on the right is the shift mechanism which is normally in the center console of the Porsche. Does that make sense?

Yes, it's obvious. I "know" 911's have the motor in back, but it doesn't always register. What I noticed in the picture was the half shafts were below the crank. On my FF, the whole unit is flipped so the half shafts are above the crank and the motor sits very low. I'm just so used to seeing it that way that I forget the Porsche engines are in backwards!...
Thanks.

Hey Dale.
Nice progress so far. Keep up the good work.

I was reading the comments about your build over at USA7's, but since I'm a poster here I thought I'd add my 2 cents.

The rising/falling rate observation is probably more of a bellcrank angle and installation issue than anything else. I can't tell from the pics, but if the wheels are at ride height then it does indeed look like your going to run out of bellcrank travel on the shock side pretty quickly. You can check this (and you probably already have) by taking off the spring and moving the suspension with the shock installed through it's entire designed range. You might find that as the wheel approaches full bump then the shock side of the bellcrank arm becomes quite close to parallel with the shock body. This can be a problem as the shock travel decreases as the arm becomes more in line with the shock, reducing the dampening force. At it's worse, the bellcrank can actually lock straight or even flip to the other side of the shock.

A oversimplified rule of thumb is that the push rod to bellcrank angle and bellcrank to shock angle should both be at or near 90 degrees at ride height.

You asked about a book to describe rising/falling rate. Allan Staniforth's Competition Car Suspension is sort of the bible, but I found Kurt Bilinski's explanation in Kimini much more straight forward.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jonathan for the explanation. I have done some testing and will need to re-engineer some things. I was just so excited to have the rear end sitting on wheels I had to share. I pretty much can answer all the design issues on Lamobrghini replicas but this is new. I'm certainly not afraid to show what I've done and listen to others that have gone before me and benefit from their wisdom.
Again, I appreciate any and all suggestions.

Well its been over 3 years since my last post. I was occupied building a new house and also got to throw in a 30 x 40 workshop. Car had been on welding table all this time.
Managed to get it on my Chassis rotisserie and removed all the rust and got it primed.

Also got the S2000 engine on a stand to work on as well.

Dale-
I've been waiting for you to update your site on the S2000 build. Glad to see you are back at it.

Since your last post in 2010 I built my car using an S2000 F22C and the rear end from a Toyota Supra with Multi-link IRS.

Thread is in my signature.

Been getting parts and working on shop. Haven't given up. Any suggestions for seats? I have 19" to play with.

Progress. Found fenders at Tractor Supply. Needed some work but should do nicely. Of course I will need to make them wider. Never do anything easy.
Added two roll loops and fabricated the back of the car as it will not be typical. Pictures on my blog.
