I've been helping a friend with his 914 project to give it more Zoom. Of course, my recommendation was to install a turbo 13B. He was game, so we began the project a couple years ago along with all of our other car activities. This week, he drove it around the neighborhood for load testing with 99% of the work completed (the stock tach isn't working yet). I had the laptop recording data and watched gages while he gave it some exercise. We were both grinning ear to ear after the jaunt.
The details:
A JDM engine was obtained and freshened along with the installation of an EFR-7670 turbo and an Electromotive GT200 ECU. A set of 914 GT steel flares were fit to the body along with scoops on each quarter panel to feed the oil cooler on one side and the intercooler on the other. A radiator and electric fan were put in the front with the modifications to feed air into the rad and exhaust it out of the hood.
The hubs were upgraded to 911 and Wilwood calipers were adapted all around. A local body shop did the finish body work and paint.
What fun. :D

Great project! Well thought out! I can only imagine how much this one increases the grin factor with the bump in HP.

I had a 74 914 2.0 many years ago! One of my favorite cars to drive!

I had added 911SC rear flairs to mine with 944 Turbo wheels, 911 Turbo front suspension with thru body anti sway bars and chassis strengthening kit (helped fix the rust from the battery box rot). It handled like it was on rails.

I had originally started an install of a SBF with aluminum heads after I blew a head gasket and had gotten as far as the motor mounted to the transaxle and the unit mounted into the car. The motor only weighed 25 lbs more than the 4cyl 2.0 and would have had more than 3 times the HP and 4 times the torque. But I sold it to make way for a Jeep CJ that I built for my daughter. :(

Can't believe how much the 914s have increased in value the last few years. Keep thinking how a Subaru WRX motor would be nice in a 914!

Hi Thom,
Yes, a Subi engine would be a good upgrade.
Now that you mention it, I also had 914's in my fleet many years ago. They were fun to drive, but only had stock 1.8 liter engines. They didn't hold a candle to the Series 2 Lotus Seven that was also in the garage.
Thanks for the compliments.

Always liked the 914
What's the weight difference between the P motor & the Dorito-spinner? Probably greatly offset by the power increase.

Jamador,
The numbers I've seen indicate they're very close. 309 lbs for a fully dressed Type IV VW and 325 for a 13BT. The only weights I've measured is 200 lbs for a 13B NA w/ a light flywheel/clutch/PP and w/o alt, intake manifold and water pump. Adding those and the turbo seems that the 325 lbs is reasonable.

Sounds about right. I weighed my 13B S4, sans ancillaries (intake, exhaust, drive belt accessories & oil pan) and it was around 200lbs.
Probably closer to 250 or so with all of that attached. Then add on the Turbo bits & plumbing & your numbers seem reasonable.

I'm pretty sure I need a few moments to pull my jaw off the floor and clean up the drool.
Awesome little project!

That makes me want to drop the 13B-MSP into the TR7 even more...

Beautiful build! I’ve always loved the 914, maybe someday... I suspect your buddy got the extra Zoom he was looking for. Will this be only a road car or Autocross too?

Must finish the MGiata so I can play with my 13B equipped Locost! Posts like this tempt me to distraction  .

Thank you for sharing,
Eric

ccrunner,
Thank you.

ohmite,
His current autoX car is a Radical ProSort DSR (it's next to me on grid at the end of my last youtube video). However, he's got a relative test driving it at the event this weekend with the possibility of selling it. The 914 would be a much easier on logistics and upkeep for him. So, yes it will be dual purpose.

Nice job. I was intrigued by the renegade hybrids conversions in the 80s. I'd probably go subie or v6 just because I am not a rotary fan.

Superb project, and I bet it handles too! My mate Terry put a V8 in his and it was a complete beast, a little too much motor me thinks.

MV8 and KinRe,
Thanks.
Yep, Terry's car sure looks like a beast and without traction control, I imagine it would be.
