Mike,
I have been keeping an eye out for a VW box, but seeing as the Renault box bolts up to the Lotus bellhousing and the bellhousing bolts up to the Zetec without any adapter, I've chosen to stick with the NG3. Going the VW route would mean sourcing a Formula Ford bellhousing and some other costly components (Hewland side plates, Hewland/Webster gears and rear cover, etc.).

As for parts availability for the Renault, they can be found, just not that easily here in North America.

I got lost about the pedal box and 3 hydraulic cylinders.

I've also temporarily installed the pedal box with the new hoses. I need to make up a reinforcing plate for where the hoses pass through the fiberglass, but at least I can now finally sort the brake pipe routing.

Does the brake pedal push on both front and rear cylinders together? Is the throttle cable not represented here?

Did the stork visit someone?

After a long, hard slog, the car is now in paint. But, it will have to be resprayed, the paint is a bit thin. It didn't fully cover in spots, but it's at least painted. Saturday morning it looked like this:

kimbo,
The brake pedal has a balance bar which operates two master cylinders, one for the front and one for the rear. The accelerator pedal wasn't in the shot, but there is now a cable and pedal sitting in the car.

I'm a bit confused on the stork comment, though.

And to the others who peruse my build logs, there won't be any photos for a while. Photobucket was the site I was using to host my photos, but they now want $399 per year to host and let you link to a 3rd party website (this forum etc). There's no way I'll be shelling out that kind of coin, and seeing as it's the warm sunny time of year, I'd rather be spending my free time in the garage on a patio then spending time updating photo links.

Hence why the best way is to upload the pictures to this site and then they'll never disappear.

Time for an update, over part of the summer and most of the fall I've been slowly working on the mechanical side of the build. I now have the CV adapters finished and installed:

Re-made the rear body mount complete with battery mount, sorted the shift cables, and finished the exhaust (though it still needs paint):

And I've finalized the serpentine belt routing:

The next step (fingers crossed it will happen this weekend) is to make smoke. I've spent nearly every waking hour of the past 3 weekends getting it closer and closer to running. Also, I've given up on painting the thing, I've tentatively arranged to have the car professionally painted sometime in the new year. It will cost more than I had wanted, but I know it will be done right.

Good progress and nice work Rod. Anxious to see it finalized.

Cheers.

Very cool build!

I always thought the Europa was a cool car with potential. The Velocity channel Overhaulin' episodes where Chip Foose modified a Europa was probably the best episodes of the entire series.

A modified Europa is on my list cars I'd like to build sometime in the future.

Keep posting your progress and photos...

Another small update, this happened last weekend:

https://youtu.be/x6p24hyJAyw

I think it's a bit lean at idle, but tuning will have to wait for a bit. Now that I know it runs I can get to finishing up the rest of the mechanical bits then bolt the body on for hopefully the last time.

Very much entertained by the dash all hooked up. Makes sense, yes...but still entertaining.

I figured it was easier to have the dash clamped to the chassis in order to check that all the gauges worked (minus the speedo and fuel gauge), check the charging system, and have an easy way to start and stop the beast. I'm tempted to clamp a sheet of plywood to the bottom of the chassis, bolt a seat to it, and see if I can drive up and down the driveway, but that wouldn't be too safe...

Safer than what, putting yourself inside the 50 year old egg shell body?

I say do it! And get it on video. Just don't fall off and drive over yourself in your own car. :)
