Francois Cevert crashed going through the uphill esses during practice. I was walking through the infield when the track became strangely silent. My friends and I hustled back to the timing tower to find out what happened. The following year Helmuth Koinigg went underneath the lower guardrail outside turn 7 during the race. He was decapitated. I was watching the race inside turn 8. Turn 7 is not visible from turn 8 but you could tell something was going on over there. The following year the Glen installed the much hated "Scheckter Chicane" in the middle of the esses to slow cars down. The chicane was named after F1 racer Jody Scheckter who championed the idea. A few years later I ended up backwards at the exit of the chicane thinking bad thoughts about Jody. I also put my Vee backwards through the catch fence that had been installed outside turn 7 in response to Koinigg's crash. I still hit the guardrail even with the catch fence so the catch fence would have been useless if I had been driving a real racecar instead of a Vee.

Only for ASR, which your car isn't elligible for anyway. P1 and P2 both say:

"The minimum rectangular opening may be measured
anywhere forward of the main roll hoop. Forward-facing roll
bar and roll cage bracing and required padding are not considered
part of the dimensions above."

OK, since I can ignore top braces between hoops in regard to cockpit opening...what do you think of this design. Just look at the cockpit area, the rest is not triangulated.

Personally, I'd be back to sitting upright, IMO you had it more right the first time...and I'd close up the space twixt shoulders and cam cover...or No, sorry, wait- intake goes there, or exhaust? Might model that in now, rather than later.

I tried this position mocked up with boards and such. Its not uncomfortable. the other advantage is that I can use a single 6 gallon wedge fuel cell in the space under the seat.The exhaust goes in the space behind the roll bar...I still have the original oil pan which allows the exhaust to pass under the engine. I am still trying to decide if the addition of a windage tray and accusump are enough protection against oil slosh....or if I need to weld up a new sump with baffles and run the exhaust off to the side. I am probably going to do the latter. Anyway, there is lots of room in this area.

...and on that note, work is a bit slow today so I think I will cut some tubes.

I am thinking seriously about letting this project go. Life sort of got put on hold for me over the last year and a half with my son's passing and nothing has been done on this thing since. I guess the other thing is that now I don't have anyone that I can share the building process or the track days with. The Locost that I completed was 99% my efforts but I had my kids hanging around the whole time which made it way more fun. I have around $11K in parts for this thing as well as a partially completed chassis. The new body was $6250 all by itself. If anyone has any interest, let me know and we will see what we can work out.

Your feelings and decision are certainly understandable. Good luck with the sale.

I hope the Hodgepdge still continues to provide you with enjoyment and pleasure. I think that photo of it at that Christmas parade is one of the coolest photos I've ever seen here. It always make me smile a big, huge, ear-to-ear smile.
