Fabbing a transmission hump and closing the firewall..

Several pics coming up showing way too much detail on the long task of making the new transmission hump.. The Aisin 5 speed is substantially bigger than the Volvo 4 speed/OD unit that came out, so I've had to widen and lengthen the hole in the floor to fit the new one..

I was able to reuse some of the original Volvo stamping, but it's been modded quite a bit to cover this pig's wider girth.. The pics show where the old hump used to live, and how I had to move it back several inches to line up the Volvo shifter hole over the new bits..

More pics of trying to build a 'graceful looking' transmission hump...

Switching tasks for a bit.. the driver's side frame rail and rear outrigger (under the driver's seat) looked pretty bad, so instead of patching them here and there, I chose to tear them out and replace them entirely. The new bits fit well, and I'm very happy with how it's turning out..

Bringing the firewall, floor, and hump together on the passenger side.. it's like progress in slow motion..

First week of August 2016..

These few pics are mostly for me to remember the state of the car early August of 16.. At this point, just a week to go until school is back in session, and I'm hopelessly behind my original deadline.. (I'll create a new, arbitrary deadline as soon as I get this build log caught up and I can get a better feel for what's realistic.. I'm the OCD type that needs a list/deadline, or no forward motion takes place  )

Late summer 2016

Took a little side trip to repair the blind nuts for the driver's side seat tracks.. It's an order of operations issue now.. I can't know where the driver's side of the tranny hump will go until I mount the dr seat, mod and place the pedal hinge box, hang the pedals and mod them to the left to my liking, then mount the drive-by-wire gas pedal.. so, in relative order here they come..

The seat mount repair is pretty straightforward- cut off the ends, weld on a new nut, and patch the ends back on.. The pedal 'hinge box' required it's own bit of attention.. I've changed my mind a bit on my insistence of having power brakes.. Mostly because squeezing a booster into the needed area was proving difficult, but also because I'm thinking with bigger rotors/calipers front and rear that I simply won't need power brakes on this 2500-ish pound car..

I sourced the master cylinder from a '93 dodge shadow (gave me manual, 7/8" bore, and disc front and rear).. had to pie cut the faces of the pedal box to get the correct tilt back for this master cylinder.. I'm using the stock clutch master cylinder out of an 09 Pontiac Solstice for simplicity's sake as it keeps the hydraulic line plug and play (and it's super small and unobtrusive)

Mocked into place once the pie-cutting was done to the pedal hinge box.. with the new angle built in, the top of the Dodge MC is now level..

Late Summer 2016

After modding the pedal pivot box, need to position it back in.. a bit tight snugging it up as close to the motor as possible..

...With the clutch and brake pedal pivot points established, I moved onto shifting the pedals to the left and slightly raising them to fit the available space.. luckily the Volvo has a ton of legroom and a wide footwell, so shifting things over to the left away from the larger bellhousing shouldn't be an issue for driver comfort/ drivability..

In the last pics I began to reshape the drive-by-wire throttle pedal, and burn it's mount in.. close to all pedals being placed..

Last Week of Summer Break 2016..

With all three pedals placed, I could move on to finishing the firewall/tranny hump.. Nice to have that come together, although I still need to go back and do the finish welding..

**I've noticed my picture quality is getting worse and worse.. don't know if I've got a camera issue or I just need to be more careful.. gotta look into that :|
