Next had to fab up a short chunk to run from the turbo inlet to the radiator support wall... had to include a homemade bung to attach the MAF sensor to..

Bottom 2 pics are poor quality, but they show how I had to cut out 'divots' on the inside sides of the nose cavity to clear the just-routed FMIC tubing.. it might have been ok to leave it as it was, but it rubbed and bothered me, so I just did what I knew I'd have to go back and do anyway; I just clearanced them now..

Getting closer to final fit of the various pipes.. The short section in the top pic (MAF tube) needed a bit of reworking as the MAF wants a straight section of at least 4" in front of it, so I ended up cutting out the MAF bung and moving it about 3" closer to the air filter..

2nd and 3rd pic are just wideshots of the engine bay with the plumbing in place.. KB58 asked why not just run straight out of the turbo and forward to the FMIC.. If only I could! simply no room.. had to go all wonky and run all the way around the back of the master cylinder, forward on the driver's side, then duck down into the intercooler... as such, unseen, but the 'cool' side snakes down the passenger side of the engine, then goes up under the oil pan and up into the throttle body on the driver's side (it was really this side of the plumbing that vexed me, as I wanted to come out of the FMIC and shoot it back to the throttle body down the driver's frame rail, but the steering box lives right in the way, so I had to go the long way round)....

Last few pics show the air filter in place next to the FMIC before the grille goes back on..

Got the axles back from Dutchman and was able to install the driver's side.. still had to source an inner boot for the passenger side- more on that quest later

Didn't want to do it, but in an effort to get the computer to live up under the dash, I had to cut a big old honkin hole in the firewall to get the GM ECM connectors through.. I couldn't find an off-the-shelf solution to close the hole back up, so I made this little doodad.. Not pretty, but it works :)

Some odd ends..

It's been awhile, so I don't even remember why I took a pic of the brake master cylinder box.. If I know me, it was to preserve the part #, so I'll just go with that  ...pretty sure it's from a Dodge something... I'll dig it out later..

The grille pic just shows that I changed the way it mounts.. a previous owner had cheezed it together, so I took a bit of time and some stainless steel bits to fit it to my liking..

Finally, a shot of the cleaned up engine harness just before install.. I'd been dreading it, but the body harness is soon to follow..

Early Summer 2017

Discovered this almost by accident.. the engine does not quite clear the closed hood as I thought it did

Technically, it's the wires on top of two of the top-of-engine sensors that jussssst kiss the hood brace.. I feel a bit foolish that this got by me, as the engine DID clear, but I didn't account for the additional room needed once the engine harness was in place.. Of course with any vibration or movement, it would be a very brief time before the wires chafe and fail.. So, either pull the engine, rework and lower the motor mounts, and mod the front crossmember (again), or; cut a clearance hole into the hood bracing to gain about 5/8" clearance..

I suspect you know which way this little fix is going to go

first pic just shows how/where the engine harness goes through the firewall now that the engine harness is in..

Focus shifts to installing the new gas tank.. The stock tank holds 12 gallons, and the new tank I've sourced (from tanksinc.com) holds 16 gallons. While not a bolt in, this new tank will live well between the 1800's rear stamped frame rails, and the filler tube comes out on the driver side as I need it to.. A bit of work will be required on the rearmost end of the driver's side frame rail to clear the new tank's neck, but once done it will integrate seamlessly, and I will retain a flat trunk floor..

Pics show the OEM tank/trunk hole.. note the rust around the hole perimeter.. super typical for these cars.. I have other rust issues around the lower inside edges of the trunk area that will need attention later (likely next summer), so for now I'm focusing on just getting this tank in and functional, knowing that this area will need more work later (I want every bit of rust taken out of this car, and I'm learning that it's best to break that unpleasant job into smaller chunks, or sections of the car.. hope to have it 'rust free' by next year)

More fuel tank info than you ever thought you'd need  ...

A few pics showing the differences/similarities between the tanks.. I really wanted those 4 extra gallons in this car as the stock 12 gallons just seems too small.. The Ecotec should give me 30+ mpg highway (one of the reasons I chose this motor was performance AND good mpg), so in theory, I'm building in an easy 450 mile range.. I suspect my bladder or creaking bones will need a break sooner that this car will get thirsty..

I do plan to daily this car, as well as take long trips... putting this together as more of a GT car than anything..

Shortened the driver's side bumper bracket a bit for clearance.. had to mod the fill tube from the top of the driver fender to back down into the corner a bit more than stock.. Also had to make a little arch/tunnel in the frame rail for the fill neck at the tank..

Last few shots with the new fill neck and vent tubes in place.. also trunk floor and access panel installed..

*note the 2nd (rearmost) 'vent tube' is actually a water drain line for the fuel door recess..

First pic is fabbing together the steel section of the upper radiator hose..

Bottom 2 pics show why these CV boots are such a hassle.. The 7.5/8.8 IRS Ford diffs used an inside CV boot that had these unusual dips in the design.. nothing really wrong with it, but Ford stopped with the NOS parts long ago for this, and in this age of 'just change the whole axle instead of fixing a torn boot', these oddball boots are tough to come by.. In my case I ended up going back out to the wrecking yard and pulling an old boot off of a T-Bird to get my 2nd axle back together.. This is the only part of this car (so far) that I can't seem to get a replacement for, but I'm not too worried as failure on these boots is pretty rare..

Rear shock upper mounts..

A bit of experimentation on the rear shocks/springs.. The rear end geometry of this 1800 is all Miata NA, so I'm running KYB AGX shocks designed for the Miata.. Of course I needed to fab up some kind of an upper mount, which is detailed in the pics.. I might have to make a couple of spacers to get the rear ride height just right, but I think it's pretty close.. Also, the stock Miata rear springs seemed a bit soft, so I swapped in NA stock front springs (160#) into these rear shock assemblies.. again, should be close to where I want to be- I think

With both of the rear axles in, the driveshaft hooked up, and the rear shocks installed, this is how she sat on her own suspension in late June..

Attention turns to the inside and positioning of things and how to route the body harness..

These 3 pics show the new position of the cowl vent knobs (fresh air 'butterfly' vents).. On the 1800, there are two control knobs, one on each side of the dash, tucked up under the end of each side of the dash.. (it never made sense to me to put the passenger side knob so far from the driver)... anyway, since I've moved the lights and wiper switches off of the dash and down up under the driver's side end of the dash, I thought it best to totally relocate these knobs to up under the center of the dash, out of sight, and both easily within reach of the driver..

These angles don't much show it, but when you're seated in the car, they are not visible..

In the process of mounting/routing all of the loose 'stuff' that hangs under the dash.. Found a nice little area on the column to mount the OBDII plug.. Last pic shows the kit wiring for the EPS control knob, which will also be mounted under the dash just off of the steering column..
