Volvo used those on a few different models in the late 60s, including the P1800. I like the look of it with them.

I used to have an Amazon with them, so maybe I'm biased :?

And there he is, the man himself! As I kid I wanted to be him, have his car, be a hit with the ladies. Even had those slip-on shoes. It's a bit sad really I know. :).
I still love the Volvo though.

My vote would be no hub caps. I don't see any nubs on the wheels to take them anyway. It can be done, and I have fitted hubcaps to steelies that weren't designed to take them, but I always had one hub cap that never really fit well. So that's make the decision even easier then doesn't it, glad I could be of help.
Cheers,
Stewart.
Oh and have a great Thanksgiving!

The wheels... Thanks for the input guys.. If I'm doing this right, the 16x7/16x6 steel wheels should look stock-ish once they're dressed out with their trim rings and baby moons.. I'm debating over painting them to match the body, or maybe a mellow shade of cream.. I think the cream would look era-appropriate and would set the red and chrome off nicely.. In the end I chose steelies to set it apart a bit, and to stay in the spirit of the OEM appearance (I think Volvo just about nailed it in the looks department on this model)..

Rear suspension work continues.. Got the rear rails in (2x2), and ended up closing up what is now the subwoofer enclosure above the rear end.. While I was back there, I also fabbed in some rear seat belt mounts- don't know why safety-conscious Volvo didn't do that in the first place..

Black Friday Deals at Pick-a-Part!

Seems the days of 50% off at Pick-a-part have been reduced to 40% off events, but even so, still worth making the trek out there on their special promotion weekends.. in this case, the long Thanksgiving weekend..

I knew I wanted a locker rear end (the "L" in the middle of the ratio on the tag), and I was cool with either a 3L73 (150 rpms over stock at 70 mph), or 3L27 (150 rpms less than stock at 70 mph).. After much searching, I found the 3.27 setup and decided to pull it... I figure I can swap it later if it's not right, but it has me so close to where I want to be, I suspect it will be fine- I keep telling myself I'm not building a race car

Time to fit the 7.5 IRS pumpkin up in to the narrowed Miata clip.. It fits pretty well, and I was able to use the Ford OEM mounting points, just had to do a bit of minor clearance trimming and fab in the anchor points.. This will make much more sense visually when I get a shot of it assembled in the next week or so.. Next step is to paint all of these bits a pretty semi-flat black that no one will ever see

Last few pics of the rear clip mods..

The separate bracket is for the 3rd leg (rear side) of the pumpkin mount- it bolts onto the back of the diff cover..

The two links laying on the vise are dummy shock lengths to hold the car up at ride height until I get onto installing the real shocks and upper shock mounts sometime later..

Thought I should drop over and take a look at how you are doing. Must say I am very impressed with your work and pace. Looking forward to seeing how you tackle the front.

Keep in mind that the front differential mounting points will see a maximum torque of "engine torque x gear ratio." Assuming the wheels aren't spinning in second gear, and if engine torque is, say, 150 ft-lbs and second gear is 2:1, then the mount will see 300 ft-lbs, or more if the mounting points are less than 12" wide.

Yeah, the stock diff mount sticks out pretty far. Here is what I did with mine. Pic from around 2002 I think.

Nice to have you check in Nohome- thanks for the kind words... Back at you- fun watching yours morph into something unique

I hear you guys on the torque.. if this motor brings anything, it's a long, flat, strong torque curve.. I've come close to what Ford designed into a much heavier car (T-Bird), so I think I'll be ok.. here's where it is now..

More diff pics- once it's in place, it's pretty tough to see any detail..

Replaced the axle seals and hung the rear end up into place... control arms and other bits to join soon.. should have it on it's back wheels next week, at least to roll around as details are sorted out..

Axles.. having custom axles made, and they need a pattern.. the yellow lines are early Miata, and red lines are 89-97 T-Bird... green box is the end size/configuration for the 2 one-off axles..

This is nice.

When you're through with it and driven a month or 2 and get bored, I'll take it off your hands.

My wife & I have always liked that body so I know she'll agree. She's the one that always want's more power.

Nice to know you're here for me Carguy

Last few bits to set the rear on it's wheels again.. had the T-Bird rear discs drilled to the 4.5 pattern- also had to have the centers bored to slip over the Protege hub centers... I still need to go back and fab caliper mounts, sort the ebrake cable mounts, and install the axles (once made), but the list back here is getting shorter, which has me turning my attention to the front....

Front End Choices...

I see 3 options for dealing with the front suspension- all of them involve fitment issues to some degree as the LNF lump is pretty close to a 25" cube.. I'm insistent on running AC and power steering (it's time to step up to modern times ya know  ), so I can't strip those ancillaries for space.. While I may take this car to a track day or two (just cause it sounds fun!), it's main duties are to be a comfortable DD/ GT cruiser; so I'm not chasing a race setup here..

#1- Use the stock clip.. this is more and more appealing as I go along in this build.. The Volvo stuff seems well designed and the 1800/Amazon guys don't complain.. there's aftermarket support on springs and sway bars too.. Down side is fabbing in power steering, and a 'slow' OEM steering box (almost 3.5 turns)-- fixes could be Electric Power Steering (EPS) and a 33% steering quickener..

#2- Miata front end.. Biggest downside to this is fab time.. there's a ton of work to narrow/totally re-fab the front Miata clip to make it fit (need to ditch the stamped Miata piece and make a one-off front clip).. Good part is I already have most all of the bits, just have to spend the time to rework them for my needs-- Would have to get RX7 front hubs and do some machining to get the 5x4.5 I need.. Also would need a brake re-work..

#3- Mustang II.. This is a good option as the street rod guys worked out the bugs years ago.. I'm a little narrower than is typical, so a bit of tweaking needed, but this is really one of the easier installs as these things go.. A metric ton of aftermarket support.. Down side is I don't have any of the needed bits (as I do for options 1 and 2), so buy in is at least $1300-$1500..

I'm going to set the motor down on the stock Volvo clip in the next few days, see what problems pop up, and go from there..
