I shall endeavor to make that happen for you.

it is getting very much closer.

last weekend my ratty old HHR insisted that I refurbish the rear brakes, but my son Cody was out, and so I gave him a sketch to work from and he made the mounts for the steering wheel from some 1.5 x .125 mild steel strap.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190521_130715.jpg

I broke out the etching tool so he could sign them...

Attachment:
cameringo_20190521_130751.jpg

then began making vertical adjustments to the wheel position.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190521_130820.jpg

it's almost there. maybe it'll get welded tonight. the possibility exists that the XKMM might be steerable by memorial day...

OMFG that'd be so much win!

It was, and even though it's a month late, here it is, first "drive" of the Jag Special. Enjoy!

Yabba-Dabba-Do, no brakes, now you need new shoes!

Good job, Rob! Now if you could just get someone in the passenger seat to make vroom-vroom noises while you push you's be done.

Cheers,

Rob, I think you needed goggles at those "break neck" speeds! You could go blind with all that velocity!

LOL

Nahh, if he didn't go blind from late night "activity" in Junior High, he won't go blind from a little wind now...

JD, was it only Jr. High for you? Amateur.

Anyway, some details on how the steering got so um, steer-y.

After My son made those fine steering wheel mount brackets, I finished welding and bracing them to the dashboard bulkhead tubes.

Boom!

Attachment:
cameringo_20190522_194514.jpg

Even moar BOOM!

Attachment:
cameringo_20190522_203346.jpg

Punto Finale!

Attachment:
cameringo_20190522_204352.jpg

Then, using a length of .75 x .120 wall DOM, I set the angle and length of the intermediate steering shaft which would connect the upper steering shaft from the wheel, to the lower steering shaft at the rack.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190524_164202.jpg

Bracketry, spline ends, stop collars, and bearings are the same combination of Jetta, Speedway Motors, mild steel and DOM as the B-3, and the brackets are the same in design - tho the lower bracket mounts vertically rather then horizontally, and the upper steering shaft is triumph spitfire with a Jetta steering universal welded on.

Once the intermediate shaft length was set, I made up the shaft weldment out of Jetta spline ends, the aforesaid .75 x .120 wall DOM and some .5 OD x .065 wall ERW as internal doublers.

Weldment parts prepped with generous bevels and plug-weld holes...

Attachment:
cameringo_20190525_144009.jpg

...And ZZZZZZAP!

cameringo_20190525_145617.jpg

Last test fit before welding the brackets in place...

Attachment:
cameringo_20190525_155514.jpg
.

...and then two days later, the upthread viddy took place.

there's more catching up to do here, I'[ll add to the story later today.

Cuz, it's got a fuel tank now. ;-)

So anyway...

a year ago, about - July 2nd, 2018 to be exact - this JAZ products 16 gallon Pro-street fuel tank showed up at my door, and I set about mocking it up in about where it was supposed to go...

Attachment:
20180702_170636(0).jpg

...fast forward 11.75 months, and I found it time to finally build up the tail section and mount the fuel tank in there.

Back up on the jacks we go, and get everything leveled up...

Attachment:
cameringo_20190610_181958.jpg

...then take the tail section top frame angles from the drawing, mitre the tubes (1.28 x .083 wall ERW, like most of the rest of the chassis), and use my proven concrete-blocks-on-the-floor method to weld the top tail frame into it's initial shape...

Attachment:
cameringo_20190610_194330.jpg

...leaving the outer legs overly long so the top frame can be placed and given and initial centering and set at the drawing distance.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190610_201500.jpg

Distance set, lop the legs off to a more reasonable length simply for ease of working. Set up the framing square on the CL and do a precise centering and alignment at distance.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190611_194015.jpg

Once you're sure of the placement - and unfortunately I don't have any pics of this, trust me, it was epic - clamp the leg ends and scribe the cut line from underneath. Cut the legs at the lines with some absolutely heroic chopsaw work, realign, center and level, and weld the top frame into place.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190611_204747.jpg

Using the chassis as a build table, construct the tail frame that defines the very back end of the chassis.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190612_184404.jpg

Weld that up, and use two lengths of tubing stock to align and clamp it into place at the back of the chassis. Measure, center, level, align, etc...

Attachment:
cameringo_20190612_193330.jpg

Weld the tail frame in place, and then cut - freehand, with the recipsaw - compound miters like a F@cking BOSS to mate the angled bottom outer tail tubes to the chassis and tail frame.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190612_202602.jpg

And then, magnets and welding.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190612_203457.jpg

Detail your magnificent welding.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190612_203522.jpg

Did I say cut freehand mitres like a BOSS? Yes, in fact I did. Once more with all the feels!

Attachment:
cameringo_20190612_210305.jpg

...and crush the 12-pic limit.

Where was I?

Oh yeah.

Cut those burly mitres and then weld the sorry bejeezziss outta those things.

Second mitre, thing of beauty, joy forever, etc...

Attachment:
cameringo_20190612_210314.jpg

angled floor bracing fit by placing tubes against the structure and marking to fit.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190614_160415.jpg

This is a job for SuperMitreMan!

Attachment:
cameringo_20190614_171318.jpg

All of these two-angle mitres are cut freehand with my Ryobi 18V reciprocating saw. mark it with a sharpie, close one eye, RRZZZZZZ. done. Clean it up on the belt sander, WELD. I got a process, I do.

Some 1.0 X 3.0 X .083 rectangle for wheel well doublers (shown tacked here). The hub housing clears by .5 inch at full travel.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190616_135446.jpg

Later that same evening, the tail section is done - minus some bottom welds that will be done once the chassis is flipped over after building the cowl hoops.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190617_203828.jpg

Then, I laid in a couple tubes to begin figuring out the tank mounting, and found that the sump needed to be about an inch higher...

Attachment:
cameringo_20190618_151638.jpg

The tank is also offset to the passenger side about 1 inch (offset driver weight). The 11-inch distance between the hold down strap recesses around the tank defined the length of this bit of 1-inch angle that made the fwd mount.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190618_195206.jpg

Weld in a length of 1-inch sq. tube to raise the rear ends of the tank mount tubes - set angled very slightly downward towards the rear to help fuel stay in the sump - and weld it all up.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190618_203903.jpg

Check fit, MINT.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190618_204038.jpg

1-inch x .125 Mild Steel strap for the tank hold-downs. here we see one formed and one yet to be formed...

Attachment:
cameringo_20190619_195633.jpg

...made from measurements sketched in the build notebook. Getting a bit dirty and dog-eared, that.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190619_195648.jpg

...and here is my new and improved - and simplified - strap bending tool. Remember that bolted tool made of two lengths of 1.0 SQ bar stock? I'm only ever bending in one direction, and so two bars is overkill, and tightening the bolts evenly was always a pain, and 1.25 .083 wall tube has a bigger external corner radius so...

...magnet a length of 1.25 x .083 wall tube to one vise jaw...

Attachment:
cameringo_20190619_200435.jpg

...and then clobber the 12-pic limit. I do that a lot this build, don't I?

See Below...

So anyway...

...mark bend lines and clamp the strap material into place, remove magnets so they don't fall off - because they will - and BASH IT WITH A HAMMER. Gud Tymez, yo.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190619_201126.jpg

Success! Again! Cuz I made TWO!

Attachment:
cameringo_20190619_202007.jpg

Check fit-y goodnesses.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190619_202057.jpg

Mark the straps for 5/16-18 bolts, drill said holes, and then match drill the tubes using the straps as drill guides.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190623_123104.jpg

Crush tubes are not necessary here, 1.0SQ x .125 thick bottom doublers will suffice. (shown prior to welding)

Attachment:
cameringo_20190624_192425.jpg
.

weld the doublers, cut up some old motorcycle inner tube for tank abrasion abatement, and bolt everything down.

Attachment:
cameringo_20190624_195952.jpg

DONE.

Next up, Cowl hoops.

Rob

In your drawing of the final look, the car has more of a sprint car tail end. Is this what you will add in the up coming installments?

Won't this put the tail a long way from the rear axle? Just asking for the over all good looks of the design.

Dale

Hi Dale

The tail in the rendering looks longer than it's turning out IRL. it's shorter than the tail overhang on the XJ6 donor. it's something like 26.25 from the vertical structure at the rear of the axle cage, so I think it'll be in proportion with the rest of the body.

so far, this build is following my experience in building the B-3: very close to the drawing in initial construction, but departing from the drawing in areas where the actual building leads in a different direction, or suggests an alternate solution.

I didn't really know how I was going to mount the tank, and so there's nothing in the drawing about that, but once I had the tail built (to the drawing) the solution for the tank mounting presented itself. There's a definite improvisational feel to some of this build, and I really like that aspect.

What's going on now is the fabrication and installation of the various cowl hoops that define the shape of the body top surfaces (my son Cody bent them up this past saturday, using some 3/4 plywood templates I made last week). so far I've got the dash hoop, intermediate dash hoop, and grille hoop installed, and have formed the trunk fwd hoop and tail end hoop.

once those are all installed, braced, and have their panel attachment flanges welded in, I'm going to flip the chassis over and complete a bunch of welds that I've been waiting on since about February. I can weld from underneath in an okay fashion, but the welds I am waiting on are structural and I was to be on top of them for best method.

Also with the chassis upside down, I'm going to do some work to the rear axle cage, to improve installation/removal of the axle, and add some bottom mounting features. in most hot rod or custom installs I see online, the Jaguar rear axle assembly is mounted only by the four 1/2-13 bolts at the top of the differential housing. I'm going to add features on the bottom that will provide attachment points for the 5/16-24 bolts that are on the bottom of the differential, at the inner LCA brackets. In my design, the rear axle is secured in place on both the top and bottom. it ain't gonna go NOWHERE. ;-)

So, remember that time one of you guys recommended that I build a chassis rotisserie, and I said "Oh, no, not for me. It would take too much time away from the build..." *snort* Oh, how we laughed!

...and then...

...and here's how it got there, in video. in the interest of full disclosure, the audio becomes slightly out of sequence with the video as the film progresses, but it's not crazy, only slightly annoying.
