Let's hope this isn't the start of winter for you, Perry. Sh*t's happening everywhere these days.

We just got our first hint of fall last night with an overnight low of 58F. It was very refreshing, I must say.

Cheers,

Yo, Perry-
The picture of snow on your deck sure is pretty. But... Keep that cold sh!t up there with you, OK?

If I could stay inside and drink hot chocolate and look at it, snow would be fine. I had to work outdoors in that stuff for a lot of years, and it kinda wore thin. I can't help but feel for well drillers, construction workers and farmers when I see snow...

C'mon now JD you know you'd love to go running buck naked from your back door and make snow angels in the white fluffy stuff!

Out to the shop for a bit today. Started adding stiffeners/doublers to the floor pans where mounting bolts are located. Using .040" steel for the floor. Drilled 5/16" holes in the doubler and plug welded it to the pan, PS and DS. Some pics.

Then I installed the shifter cable, tabbed some cable mounts for each end, measured the travel needed at the trans end, did some figuring and drilled the steering column shifter arm to provide the correct amount of travel. Some pics.

JD I think you need to clarify, ain't gonna go in snow again, or run around buck naked again. (You don't have to run, just sit on your deck and enjoy the weather   ).

Long day in the shop today. Took some construction paper, scratched, scratched again, and started making patterns. Transferred over to .040" and ended up with something like this. Creased the sheet metal to prevent oil canning.

Then I fabbed up the tunnel something like this. Creased the sheet metal on 3 sides to prevent oil canning.

Then the Capt'n and myself had a spiced and looked over the Topolino and relaxed, twice. Then I burnt up a lot of 35mm film taking these pictures

The whole shebang (is that a word?) is held together with Cleco's. Good thing too, because I must have taken everything apart 20 times today. Once off the frame, will hole punch and plug weld, but first the firewall needs to be constructed.

The following is a Public Service Announcement to everybody reading this log:
DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT question Perry about sitting around naked in the snow. Don't ask, just take my word for it. You DO NOT want to know! :ack:

And, on the other end of the visual/good taste spectrum, that sheet metal work looks incredible! Really nice work!

Looking good, Perry.

I'm so envious of the space in your shop. I've got so much stuff in my garage, I bang myself up every day at least once and usually several times on something.

Cheers,

LOL! I guess you had to be there to get what JD is saying, good on him to warn people, but it's a little too late. You can't undo what's done.
Lonnie-S wrote:

Ok, I'll give you 200 sq ft of my shop for 2 months of your warmer weather.

Sooooo, this morning I went to get some 18G steel sheet and some 6061T6 3 1/2" aluminum rod. I got a quote from Metal Supermarket for 12" of 6061T6 rod, $99. Phoned my guy, he quotes me $51 for the same thing, guess where I buy my steel and aluminum.
Back on page 1 of this build I was cobbling together some cheap coilovers. They came with a plastic top hat :ack:, poor.
So I got my hacksaw out, drill bits, files, bubble gum, elbow grease, and sand paper and came up with my own version of a cheap top hat. Will it work? Time will tell, what the *ell.

So I'm sitting here getting ready for the teaching day; in the background I'm playing Pandora, and on comes "Black Betty".. good song, good groove.. then I click over to see what's up with Perry's build.. He's linked some sort of video..

Perry, your 'Snow Bird Celebratory Dance' is spit-out-your-coffee funny when played with Black Betty blaring in the background

Winters past must have done bad, bad things to you

That's a relief Lonnie! Thought I was going to stand out because I was different.......

Back to the build now. This car has 2 roof latches that latch the fabric top front header to the body, just like other convertibles. Anyhow there was only 1 latch. I priced out new latches, of course they're only sold in pairs, at $216US which converts to $282 Canuck dollars, to rich for my blood. So being Locost minded, knowing this is a hobby and my labor is worth nothing, I scratched and rubbed and figured I could fabricate something that would work. using scrap steel, metal saw, hack saw, cut off wheels, grinder, mig welder, silver solder, files, and elbow grease I came up with these after about 8 hours. Not chromed but serve the purpose.
Attachment:
IMG_4347.jpg

Then I decided to build the battery box. I remember a co worker who used to build jewelry boxes as a hobby telling me a box is the hardest thing to build, squareness in 3 dimensions. He's right. Cut up the pieces, bent them, and spot welded together. If I told you it was perfectly square I'd go to 'ell for lying.
Attachment:
IMG_4349.jpg

Attachment:
IMG_4350.jpg

I then measured, marked, checked, double checked, triple checked, then cut the battery box hole in the shelf behind the seat area.
I was out by 1" :BH: too close to the diff. There was only 1/4" between the box and the diff casting, not good enough for me.
Attachment:
IMG_4351.jpg

So I cut a patch strip and spot welded it in, and moved the hole towards the drivers side 1". That's the way it's going to be, that 1" patch will be incorporated into the stiffeners that will be welded on the underneath of the shelf, so I say "It was planned that way!"
