Haha. Reverse is in neutral as life outside of car building is moving forward in 6th gear.

Puns aside.. been working on windshield frame v3.0.. the more I think this is temporary, the less effort goes in. You know the phrase, "nothing is more permanent than a temporary solution".. im trying to avoid that and build something more than "to pass".

Otherwise, I havent ordered the starter parts yet. Mainly due to the tax bill that is on the horizon.. I dropped everything off at the accountants on thursday and should know the damage next week. I get kind of skiddish this time of year.. if i had those parts, id be at the machine shop with a set of drawings, then off to the lws to stock up on supplies, and before you know it.. hundreds of dollars are gone.. so moving slow on purpose.

Work is crazy, I have a schedule this month with my 6 month training booked in too. Already in the overtime window.. yikes. Id trade the extra money for my time at home in a heartbeat.

Business is starting up aswell. Im making changes in that im no longer interested at selling my time at a discount for labourous tasks or higher risk.. Im just focusing on lawn care this year.

Ill be 36 soon and realizing that we spend the bulk of our lives selling the only thing we can never get back or giving it away for free. The good news is that ill be electing to turn down work in favor of family time and when theyre in school, working on the car or on our home.

Progress will be slow between now an July due to life.. that has historically been the pattern the last couple of years.

Andrew

Gotcha on the busy schedule Andrew.. it's life, and these projects are supposed to be fun... Up until my mid 30's, the chase for the $$ was of utmost importance, but my mid 30's were awhile ago, and now my time (and what I choose do with it) is of the highest consideration--

I'm not truly ready to chase the reverse setup yet; doing as we do, and trying to research a little bit ahead of where I'm headed- no stress..

Keep at it when the schedule allows.. some progress is better than none at all

Just spent an entire weekend day reading through your build. Absolutely amazing - best work I've ever seen. And I've worked with some pretty impressive folks!

I also have an extensive aviation background - feel free to PM or email me to chat about that if you like. I'm currently an instructor (and line pilot) for one of the big 3 in the US, and just finished a great special project I was a Subject Matter Expert on (UPRT to meet 121.423 requirements in our qual and recurrent training programs).

You, sir, are a true inspiration. Keep up that incredible work!

Thank you Randy for the flattering comments.. I showed this to my wife and she said.. " does this mean you are now capable of picking up your dirty socks off the bedroom floor"... Ill work on that..I hope that was on a layover you took the time to read the build log. Time at home these days is gold, especially a weekend day for this junior capt. I might get 3 a month.

Check your PM's shortly.

Ill post pics off my phone later, been working on a cardboard template for the windshield. taking this back to square one, it deserves it. The need for a windshield itself is an aesthetic challenge, so I am putting in the time to mitigate as much ugliness as I can.

Andrew

Update.. with little progress, but setting up for the next round work I have planned.

The tax bill was a fraction of what I thought it was. It paid to be conservative, but accurate is always best.

Business is all caught up and theres a lull between applications. Speaking of, I have a client in aeropace who I have traded my services for paint.. on thursday a 2 gallon kit of ppg desothane showed up.

The gx390 starter parts also showed up. The ring gear is 8 inches od. Thats all the measuring I could do. The adapter will need to machined. It just so happens that a coworker does machine work on the side and also wants a new lawn. Im going to make that happen for him in june. July and August im ussually slow with business so ill be back at it then.

Otherwise still alive and planning my next moves.

Andrew

Here some pics of winshield v 3.0. A little wider and made from mild steel. Lots of template work to get the curve "close enough". The bottom of the windshield will have a curve to it, but that is yet to be decided on.

Previously spoke of some frame alterations to clear the reverse ring gear. I cut out the diff mounts and fabbed up the piece to fit. Youll see the cross member that will need to ne cut out. Ill do as much welding as i can, however i am using blind rivets and the holes to locate and jig everything properly.

Speaking of cutting, i initially went cheap on cutting disks and abrasives. After trying out 3m cubitron cut off wheels, I am sold on the higher end abrasives. Cubitron looks to be top of the line so ordered "mid" grade 3m silver cut off wheels in bulk, which I cant really tell the diference between them an cubitron. Excellent value with 3m silver. Cutting speed and longevity seem to balance with the higher price tag. Shop time seems to be precious these days so spend more is getting more.

Pics on the way..

Boy, that old 10%/ 90% ratio seems to be kicking in here. Looks like the last 10% is taking up 90% of the time to do. :D

As always, excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Ron

.

Thanks Ron.. compound that with "i have 90 percent less time".

Finally caught up with business. Ill be busy again in a month so a good window for progress presents itself.

On call with work next month so fingers crossed little to no call outs.

The fab work is done on the frame repair piece and installed using monobolts. I did the bulk of the welding on the bench after locating and drilling off the critical holes. Having a tig and a footswitch makes tacking challenging especially deep within the chassis, so the part was made seperately. Using fasteners prior to welding keeps things aligned and true. I will do as much welding as I can, There is still a few pieces to make and weld, notably the closeouts to box in the cut out frame. Was happy to see little to no corrosion on the inside of the tubing.

I just ordered a Tig finger switch to help with the welding.

Ive sketched out the flywheel design and ill make a dxf file for the machinist. Althought crude, here are some measurements to mate to a toyota mk2 cressida pinion flange.

So what does all this weigh.. the frame repair piece is 2 lbs, ring gear and starter are 5, and I figure the flywheel will add another 2-3 lbs. Perhaps 10 lbs all in, less what was cut out. Paint, windshield, seat, are the major projects left.

Andrew

Update.

Tig finger switch showed up. It looks awkward, but its not. Ordered a new 9 torch kit from linde thats 25ft long, mine is only 12.5. My 9 torch body is melted in a few places.. pushing the duty and amperage limit of this thing. Makes welding on the car way easier.

Welding the frame wasnt too bad, what was challenging was seeing the weld pool. Theres only so much you can bury your head in there while wearing a helmet.

Did more composite work, it never ends. Im trying to make this light and thin, unfortuneatly that makes it susceptible to damage from "hanger rash".

Used a rare earth magnet to keep the gas filler door closed. It is potted in with epoxy. Action is light yet positive.

Filled in a section with 2k foam, sanded down and glassed over.

Planning my paint activities for the fall. There is hope to get the paper work in later this year.

Busy times with business and work, I know, same old story.

Cant wait untill november when the business wraps up for the season and full tilt on the car project and unlike last year , no major home repairs or renos planned so that will free me up.

Shop update: I need better organization in the shop to accomodate business needs, which means moving the water softener and air compressor to the back of the shop, a low traffic area. A new compressed air system was on the horizon for better air quality and flow. I moved on it sooner than expected due to a healthy balance sheet and continual business investment can offset the tax liability. I make and repair equipment on the side so the investment is legit to support my business.

Ive been picking away at the electrical and plumbing on rain days and took delivery this week. 20cfm 5hp 80 gallon, and refrigerated dryer, 80 percent duty cycle.
