My car is currently licensed and titled in Nebraska (no yearly Safety inspections required) I am going to be moving to Texas, is there any issues I need to be aware of to get my car registered in TX. It is registered as a 2009 Assembled Vehicle in Nebraska.

You should not have much of an issue since your vehicle is currently registered. You're supposed to get it registered within 30 days of moving here.

You will have to get it safety inspected yearly and if you are moving to the metro counties in Dallas, Houston or Austin, you will have to pass CO2 emissions.

Good luck.

You might double check with the current status of Texas in regards to titling homebuilt vehicles. I'm also a VW dune buggy builder & TX is cracking down on rail buggies/VW trikes. Looks like TX is going after the homebuilders, with rules that say that won't title vehicles that were not NHTSA certified from a manufacturer?

http://ftp.txdmv.gov/pub/txdot-info/vtr ... ok_451.pdf

Excerpt: From the PDF file:

Eligibility for Title: Homemade vehicles are not eligible for title or registration. Homemade vehicles are described as vehicles that were not previously manufactured by a NHTSA approved manufacturer or a vehicle created by merging two or more vehicles from different vehicle classes that were never engineered or manufactured to be combined with one another by the original manufacturers of those vehicles (such as a motorcycle front and the rear of a Volkswagon Beetle).

I don't live in Florida, but have VW buggy & trike buddies that are in a tizzy in Texas over the recent titling decisions in Texas... study the rules carefully before building!

But Texas is a SEMA state so that shouldn't be happening.

As of April 2013 in Texas: (the full passage)

Page 25-16:

Eligibility for Title

"Homemade vehicles are not eligible for title or registration. Homemade vehicles are
described as vehicles that were not previously manufactured by a NHTSA approved
manufacturer or a vehicle created by merging two or more vehicles from different vehicle
classes that were never engineered or manufactured to be combined with one another by
the original manufacturers of those vehicles (such as a motorcycle front and the rear of a
Volkswagon Beetle).Vehicles can be assembled from two vehicles (previously manufactured by NHTSA
approved manufacturers to NHTSA safety standards) when they are from the same
general vehicle class (such as a Ford Sedan front and a Honda sedan rear), but there is no
guarantee that these types of vehicles will be considered ‘road worthy’ and eligible for
registration. If the vehicle can be titled, but is not eligible for registration, the vehicle
could be considered for titling as a off-highway branded vehicle."

I'm just the messenger...

I would think that an assembled vehicle that is a replica of a series 2 or series 3 Lotus 7 could be accomplished given the wording in section 25.14.

I think the fact that the car is titled in another state would also make titling in TX under section 25.14 possible.

Good luck and let us know how this turns out.

First off, thanks to all for this amazing site. I am about five months into my research of "Am I capable of a build?" and "Do I want to build?" and the invaluable contributions of forum have pushed me into a solid "Yes" for each question.

Unfortunately, I didn't expect my first post to be "Is it legal for me to build?" I live in Fort Bend County, Texas and reading the link to the DMV manual the answer seems to be largely no. Am I mis-reading it? Do Locost's fall under the definition of a "replica" or are they just "homemade vehicles"? Does it all come down to getting the right inspector?

If I buy a kit then registration seems possible however I was looking forward to the challenge of welding my own frame and I wasn't budgeting for an additional $10,000 to buy the kit. If anyone has experience registering a book or McSorley chassis since the April 2013 regulations went into effect I would greatly appreciate your insight.

Thanks again for all the great info on the board.

I haven't been on here much lately since I have my car finished, more or less. I saw this and will tell my story.
I have much more of the story under the heading Colorado registration. I moved back here to Houston in December of last year. Since the car was already registered somewhere it was fairly easy.
First I had to have "Texas" insurance, that is my insurance card has to have Texas not Colorado on it. Same insurance though, then I had to get it inspected. One place said they had no idea what to do and sent me to another station. They said, what the heck is this thing? But went on to inspect it anyway. My lights all work, my horn works, I have Brooklands and no wipers, I have only lap belts. the car is very loud, still passed. The sticker covers most of my windshield though. I took all the receipts to the window at the DMV downtown. Girl there asked it it was a two or four door, having no idea what it was either. I said it didn't have any doors. She shrugged and put 0 on the form. I gave them something like $200 and had new plates and another big sticker for my "windshield", now most of it really is covered, but they see no safety issue there. Could be different where you live, but that's' what happened for me.

Wayne -

Thanks for your insight! The internet really is a small place - I had just found http://texaslocost.homestead.com/ about two weeks ago and your story and your perserverance contributed to the "Yeah, I can do this" decision. Weridly enough, I also made the move from Houston to Colorado back to Houston. I wish I had started my project back when I was living in Winter Park!

I have a good mechanic shop out here in Sugar Land and I think between the shop and I we could definitely get the car to a roadworthy condition. The titling process is a big concern though because I don't see a good out in the regulations for getting a title on a scratch built chassis. Without a title, I can't get assigned a VIN. Without the VIN, I can't get insurance, etc. . . . :BH: I probably will have to walk into a DMV office and I hope I find the right person. Maybe get a title as an off-road vehicle and then work backwards to proving it is road legal?

Thanks again for your story - it was a heck of a read and highly informative. Yeah, looking at the picture on your home page and imagining the standard Texas inspection and registration stickers on the windscreen is something else. Take care - Robert
