I may have been bitten by the racing bug, or at least the idea of it, and I'm finding it tough to sort through the rules/layers of sanctioning bodies to know where I might belong..
A little background-- I'm building a 1963 Volvo 1800S (build link is in my signature) with a late model direct-injected 2.0 turbo/5 speed (best guess is 300-350hp w/ it's tune).. The car will likely scale at 2400/2500#.. I'm just getting it running, and haven't even 'opened it up', but the fact is, even though it's not yet sorted, I can tell it will be spooky-ef-fun fast
..
A little voice in the back of my head keeps suggesting that it would be fun, if I dare, to put it on a track with other 'vintage/period' cars (I love the old stuff).. I'm not thinking I'm going to go out and whip the world, but I am thinking I've got a fun car that I'd like to drive in anger, and wouldn't it be fun to be out there with other classic cars..
...When I got my last project (BEC) together recently I took it out to an open track/test day and had a blast, but there were only 2 or 3 other 'old' cars out there.. most of the cars were impressive to be sure, but too new and 'modern' for my taste..
So I'm wondering about 'vintage racing'.. I'm nowhere near the stock specs for my model/make/year anymore, but surely there's a 'sportsman's' class that lets engine swap guys run? Again, I'm not crazy competitive; just sort of looking to get on the track and grow into this car
I like the look and atmosphere of older cars, whatever the marquee, and I'm not sure where to go to be involved.. To be honest I'm not even sure I've got the nerve to go door to door out there.. Finally, mine is not a 'race car', but a daily driven street car that I might want to track occasionally..
*btw, I'm in central/southern CA
Any thoughts?
thanks-
