Title says it all really. Just one of those things I've toyed with.

something mid engine with a lot of torque and fat tires to get out of the corners.
as little car as possible, just enough to hold the major components and the driver and remain within the rules for modified.
lighter than the weight break and ballast to the weight.
probably an aluminum v6 with a blower but may be a flat 4, again supercharged with a roots style blower that makes boost low down

As an example: This is George Bowland's multi-time National Championship A-Mod car that he and son Todd built a few years back. (Todd was an aerodynamicist in Indy-car, now works for Joe Gibbs...)

Lots of wing, ground effects with skirts and big rear diffuser. Tube frame that's mostly roll cage. Power is a three-cylinder, two-stroke snowmobile motor driving thru a CVT of some kind. (I think the gearbox is also from a snowmobile.)

He came to one of our Dixie Region local events and won overall by a margin of about 10 seconds. In addition to the Solo Nats championships, he was "King of the Hill" at several hill climb events with it. So, you may not "like" his car (I think it sounds like sh!t...), but it's hard to argue with the results.

i hadn't considered 2 strokes but twice the bangs per rev compared to a 4 stroke is a lot of power for a light package.

he really is driving a pair of wings and not much more.

Yeah, we have a couple of A-mods similar to that here. I was also thinking snowmobile powertrain, although I don't know I could do 2-stroke or carbs. Part of me hates CVT but, so long as it was predictable, I can see it being faster to drive. I'm going to have to get my driving up to task before trying A-mod though :mrgreen: E-mod is enough for now.

I'm pretty sure the Acme Special isn't legal anymore. You can see the flexible skirts, theres also a YUUUGE squirrel cage fan and a full pan that turns it into a sucker. BRILLIANT way to "skirt" a loophole in the rules and build an advantage.

Here's my little AM and it's gone through some revisions since this was taken.

Light space frame, powered by CBR600 to a chain drive diff.
It's going to get another rework to shorten the wheelbase a few inches and go on a diet.

And it needs more tire.

First design the car to have proper low speed ground effect... Skirts are legal, so go for it... have proper tunnel i.e. maximize them...

I'm still on the fence for CVT.... It will take away some of the tunnel space, but some newer turbo 4 snowmobile engines might be insteresting.

Yhea I'll admitt A mod is attractive, but I'm stikking to D-mod.... plenty of challenges for me... Yup break is over in my case :D
